Why should you go and see The Avengers: Age of Ultron?

How can you review the new Avengers film without giving away any spoilers? So very difficult! Especially for a Marvel fan like me – I’m finding it very difficult to contain my excitement, at the moment. All I’ll say is that it was an awesome film, and you should definitely go and see it. It was probably the most eagerly awaited film of the year, and it’s great for people of all ages. Bonus info – one scene was shot at Royal Holloway, where many of the authors at Kings go! All of us were beside ourselves with excitement, and we hope that Chris Hemsworth comes back to visit us again soon!

It’s hard to write a plot outline without giving away any key details, but I’ll give it a go. Basically, it’s been a while since the events of the first film (not sure exactly how long though), and the Avengers are trying to destroy the rest of the Hydra bases. That’s an evil organisation that’s associated with the Nazis. They get an important artefact, and Tony Stark/Iron Man has an idea. However, it goes wrong, and the evil artificial intelligence robot Ultron comes to life. The Avengers have to destroy him before he destroys the planet, and you learn many surprising things about the gang along the way.

Not much has changed about the Avengers we know and love, they all look the same and have the same skills. As ever, Captain America is honourable and noble. Bruce Banner has got some more control of his Hulk alter-ego. Iron Man is the same as usual, but his suit is improved. You get the picture. But when a witch gives them visions of what they fear, we learn something about the Avengers – Natasha Romanoff’s shady past, Iron Man’s only fear, and how Thor sees the future of Asgard.

There’s also some completely new characters, and some characters that have previously been in other films are given parts in the Avengers. The new characters are the Maximoff twins, otherwise known as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. “He’s fast and she’s weird” in the words of S.H.I.E.L.D agent Maria Hill. Tony Stark’s virtual butler J.A.R.V.I.S is given a human form, and joins the Avengers to fight Ultron. Then, Falcon appears at the very end. He’s the guy from the Captain America films, he has big metal wings that allow him to fly. These new characters really help to rejuvenate the Marvel universe, just in case you thought the old characters were getting dull.

So what’s next for Marvel? Well, they released a timeline very recently that shows us what to expect. They’re making a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel (yay! More Rocket Raccoon!), and you’ve also got the third Captain America film, and the third and final Thor film coming your way. At the very end of the credits, Age of Ultron says “The Avengers Will Return”. Don’t know when, or where, but they’re coming. Because if they can’t defend the world, you can be sure they’ll avenge it.
