Whistle Stop London Tour

Whistle Stop London Tour

You’re in London, but you’ve only got a day to see everything? Sounds impossible, right? Well, believe it or not, it isn’t. If you’re not too fussed about seeing everything in great detail and just want to get a few photographs with London’s great landmarks, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get everything done. London is a very walkable city, and if you know the route then you can see many landmarks of London by simply walking from one place to another. If you don’t particularly enjoy London, then taking the Tube and using a good map also means you can see everything very speedily.

If you haven’t got a very big budget, not a problem. You can take a 4 mile walk around the main sights of London to save money on transport, but if you already have an Oyster card, you may as well use it! You can also save money by buying snacks and drinks at little supermarkets rather than local kiosks, as they have more regulated prices. For example, if you’re walking by the Houses of Parliament, there’s a Tesco Express across the road, at the bottom of Portcullis House. Places like the British Museum are free, as well, so you can still spend time at some of London’s top attractions.

If you start by the London Eye, you can walk over to the Houses of Parliament, then take a right down Whitehall and see many government buildings, plus Downing Street! Whitehall will take you to Trafalgar Square, and from here you can decide if you want to go to the West End and shopping district, or walk down the mall to Buckingham Palace. If you choose the first option, you can walk through the shopping district to the British Museum, and then back via Leicester Square and Covent Garden. By Buckingham Palace, you can get a Tube from Green Park to somewhere else you’d like to see.

If you prefer to do some Underground-hopping, then be careful and plan your route in advance! This will save you the confusion of looking at Tube maps and getting confused at which stations you have to change. For some landmarks, you may have to get the Tube whether you enjoy walking or not – the Museum district in South Kensington is a little far to walk from the centre. Also, make sure to check the Transport for London website for information about train delays, station upgrades or bad services between certain places. It’ll come in a lot of use. If you have an Oyster card or a Travelcard bought from National Rail, then you have access to trains, the Underground, buses, trams and almost all transport in London, so if you find it easier to get the bus between places then you could do that!

Bear in mind there will be some places you might want to spend a bit longer in, like the National Gallery, the British Museum, or a café somewhere. Include this in your plan, so you know how much time you have. Museum opening hours can also be a bit annoying, so make sure to check these, too. There’s nothing worse than getting to your favourite Museum and finding you have only 15 minutes before it closes!

It’s a good job London is such an accessible city, and everything is within easy reach of other interesting things – means we can see all we want to see, without having to regret missing out on all the main tourist attractions!
