What will happen to the ice?

What will happen to the ice?

If I pour  myself a full glass of water and add an ice cube will the water overflow once the ice melts? Try this experiment and find out for yourself!

 What you’ll need:

- Warm water.

- An ice cube.

- A long clear glass.

What to do:

Step 1 - Pour warm water into the clear glass until it reaches the very top!

Step 2 – Place the ice cube into the glass of water – be careful not to spill any water over the edge of the glass!

Step 3 – The waiting game begins: sit back and watch the ice cube melt!

What has happened?

Once the ice cube fully melts you’ll be able to see that water hasn’t spilt over the edge of the glass! This is because when water freezes and turns into ice it expands taking up more room than it did previously so when the ice cube melts it actually takes up less space than the ice did originally! You’ll be surprised to find the level of the water doesn’t change much at all!

The difference between ice and water, solid and liquid:

Water turns into ice when it finds itself below its freezing point (which is zero). Ice is solid whereas water takes a liquid form. The difference is that in a solid molecules are closer to  each other and cannot change positions or move whereas in a liquid molecules are slightly more spaced out and can adapt to other physical shapes.
