We Are The In Crowd are a pop-punk outfit from Poughkeepsie, New York State. They’re comparatively new on the scene, but they’ve become something of a staple in Kerrang! magazine. The lead singer is Tay Jardine, with backing singer Jordan Eckes, guitarists Cameron Hurley and Mike Ferri, and drummer Rob Chianelli. They’ve worked with quite a lot of other rock bands before, so even if you haven’t heard one of their solo singles, you’ve probably heard them featuring on someone else’s song (if you like rock music, that is!)
At first, they released an extended play called “Guaranteed to Disagree” in 2010. This had a few good songs, but it wasn’t what We Are The In Crowd needed to launch their career. So in 2011, their debut album “Best Intentions” came out. This led to their first music videos coming out, with “Both Sides of the Story” and “Rumor Mill” having over 5 million views combined. Since then, their popularity on the web has exploded, and this is reflected in growing ticket sales and more headlining gigs.
I first saw them when they were a support band to All Time Low, a band they often collaborate with. It got to the point that I was so excited about seeing them, that I was looking forward to seeing the supporting We Are The In Crowd than the main act! They do a lot of touring, and they work very hard. They’re a frequent fixture as a supporting act, but they also do headline gigs at slightly smaller venues. This year, you can see them on the Vans Warped Tour, the most famous tour for indie/alternative/pop-punk rock bands.
Last year, their second album was released, and it’s called “Weird Kids”. Surely, this is something most teens can relate to. The album peaked at number 9 on the rock album charts, pretty high up for a band that does a lot of supporting gigs! Catchy tracks like “Manners” and “The Best Thing (That Never Happened)” got their own music videos. They’re a bit of a change from their other music videos, they’ve got a slightly more break-up theme. If you want to sing about somebody you don’t like, though, nothing else does the job quite like those two songs.
Also on the album is a very personal song about Tay Jardine’s father, who died when she was younger. It was truly beautiful live, lovely to hear in between all the energetic jumping around and air guitaring along. The band have this unique energy and dynamic force between lead singer Tay and additional singer Jordan, which separates them from the rest of the pack. That, and the fact it is one of the only mainstream rock bands to have a female vocalist, as it is a very male-dominated industry.
Politics aside, We Are The In Crowd announced very recently that they are working on writing their next album! This is very exciting news, and it’ll be great to hear what this up-and-coming band have in store next for us.
