Upcoming Films Spring 2015: Part 2

Coming this year are several new Disney movies. One of the biggest and most influential production companies worldwide, they release on average around 10 movies every year, so it’s interesting how they manage to keep their films feeling fresh, different and new. The variety of sources they use for their films is amazing, so I’m going to look at some of the films they’ll be releasing in the near future and the ideas behind them.

‘Tomorrowland’ is a film set to be released towards the end of May and is based around one of the areas from the several Disney parks. The land is slightly different in each park, and they are all constantly updated to keep them looking futuristic, rather than them slowly becoming a laughable, outdated prediction of the future. This film should be exciting and is directed and co-written by Brad Bird, who is well-known for working on Pixar films such as ‘The Incredibles’. The film will also feature a star cast including George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. There is little knowledge about what the film will entail, since the theme park area has never really been explained, so though we know it will be based in the Tomorrowland of the theme parks, the storyline itself was pretty much up to the script writers. The area of the theme park is so iconic that it will be interesting to see what storyline the film makers have come up with and what the audience and Disney fans think of this explanation. The teaser trailer again does not show a lot, but it suggests that when the main character holds a pin with the Tomorrowland logo on it, she is transported there. Clooney’s character appears to know more about the world and to be somewhat of a guide for her. There is a suggestion that what happens in Tomorrowland also effects the real world, and in the later trailer it shows that when she is moving in a car in the real world she will float along in Tomorrowland as well, suggesting that by touching the pin she is simply seeing this other world, but is in both worlds at once. It will be interesting to see how this film turns out and the reviews it gets, because fans will be wanting something new and creative rather than a cliché sci-fi movie.

Another film being released soon is the Disney-Pixar collaboration ‘Inside Out’. This film about emotion looks like one both children and adults will really enjoy. From the trailer alone it appears to have both some really fun, exciting segments, but also seems to have a lovely emotional element. This is one of the reasons that I’m such a big fan of Pixar films in general, since they always give you such a perfect mix of emotion and fun. The film is about an ordinary family, but focusses mainly on the small people inside their heads. Each of five key emotions is expressed as a character which sits inside the head of the real human characters in the film and tells them what to do. Ideas like this have been seen before, but somehow Pixar still, in this trailer, manages to make the idea seem fresh, new and better than ever before, with the perfect finish for which they are known. It’ll be interesting to see if this film delivers as usual and exactly how the storyline plays out as that is still left quite ambiguous from the trailers.

If you’d like to learn more about either of these upcoming films, take a look at their trailers as they’ll get you much more excited about the films themselves, and I personally cannot wait to go and see these two in cinema very soon.
