Upcoming Films Spring 2015: Part 1

We’re now in spring, and fast moving towards summer, and a new season means a whole host of great new movies coming out in cinema. So over the next few articles, I’m going to take a quick look at the ones I’m most looking forward to in the run-up to the summer season, and what we know about them so far.

To begin, this May 1st, will mean the release of the next chapter in the epic Avengers Saga, with ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. From the trailer, this film looks like it should be good, with more of the same kind of action we saw in the first film. When an Avengers film comes out, I’m always quite excited, because this film franchise is just so ambitious and well-crafted that it has to be given credit. The first Avengers film, for those who don’t know, was an attempt to connect the entire Marvel franchise, with characters from all the different film series coming together against a serious foe, just as would occur in the comics.

This second film, sees the characters meet again, and battle against an even deadlier enemy. The film series so far has been led by director Joss Whedon, famous for TV series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, and he has also acted as a guide for all of the other connected films in the series in what has been described as Phase 2 of the saga.

By the end of Iron Man 3 Tony Stark appeared to be giving up his life as Iron Man altogether, and in Thor 2, the titular character left his position as ruler of Asgard to return to his love, Jane, on Earth. Captain America on the other hand is still stuck in a world he doesn’t really know, and has only the other Avengers to turn to. The Hulk supposedly has a much bigger role in this film, though he did not get his own film in the period between the two Avengers movies. Equally, Hawkeye and Black Widow are expected to expand as characters in the second film. The film will also introduce new heroes, in the form of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, to the team. What’s most interesting is the new villain, Ultron. It seems from the trailer that he may have been accidentally created by Stark, and then must be stopped by the team as a whole, so it will be interesting to see what Stark’s reaction to this is.

In the trailer, we can also see Stark fighting against the hulk in a new super-sized armour, suggesting that the Hulk may be becoming unmanageable in this film, and that there may be some friction between the various team members. The ending of this film will be particularly interesting, since it will lead into phase 3 of Marvel’s plans for the universe, with films like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and the relationships between the characters at the end could open up whole new storylines, such as the Civil War storyline in the comics, where there is a feud between Captain America and Iron Man. However this film turns out though, there are sure to be a few surprises in store!

In the next article, I’ll be taking a look at two more films that I’m excited about in the coming months.
