Suitable for 15+!
If you like watching Marvel movies, and you don’t like waiting in between the long gaps for the next film, then I’ve got a solution for you. Remember Agent Coulson, a regular in the Iron Man and Thor films, who was tragically killed in the Avengers? Do you remember how he was all excited when he got to meet Captain America, and managed to freak him out by being his biggest fan? Well, he has a series of his own now, and it’s called Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Created by the director of the Avengers films (and his brother), this series is a must-watch for both comic book and television fans alike.
Agent Coulson has been given his own team, and they set about protecting the world from various different aliens. The first two episodes start off a bit slow, but don’t be put off. At first you’re a bit confused about what’s going on, but don’t worry, all will become clear. Plus, you’ll really start to like Agent Coulson’s team, and you’ll be rooting for them no matter who they come up against.
Agent Coulson’s team is made up of lots of different people over the series, but there are four key characters. First of all, there is Skye, a hacker who Coulson recruited to join his team. He sees her as his protégé, but their relationship is one of the highlights of the show. Skye never really had any family, and although their relationship comes from work, there’s a father-daughter feeling that will charm you all. Their warm friendship is what makes it even harder when there are divisions within the team.
Coulson’s second-in-command is Agent Melinda May, a good agent with a reluctance to go back into combat again. Although she comes across as a little cold and distant, she believes in Coulson even when no one else does, and she demonstrates her loyalty to the team when it matters most. An interesting bit of trivia is that the actress who plays her was the voice of the main character in the Disney “Mulan” film.
The other two characters are fresh out of the SHIELD academy, and are British scientists. Fitz is Scottish and an expert in engineering, creating gadgets for the team to use out in the field. Simmons is a biochemist, and as well as analysing substances, occasionally acts as the team’s on site doctor. She is from the North of England. So if you’re worried about the series being a bit too American, don’t worry, these two British characters take it down a notch. Regardless of nationality, though, these two are a valuable asset to the team, and the show wouldn’t be the same without them.
As well as the obvious connection with the films (Agent Coulson), the series links in with them very well. There are cameos from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) himself. Lady Sif, a friend of Thor’s in both films, also helps the team out in a few episodes. There are also constant references to the movie, so if you’re a huge fan, then look out for those.
Although there are only 2 seasons, each season has over 20 episodes, and each episode is about 40 minutes long. It’ll keep you entertained for a little while yet, but I’ll warn you – it will devastate you by the end of the second series. Just like any good TV show should.
