The internet has been going a little crazy recently about a Channel 4 show called “Gogglebox”. A programme with such a weird title sounds like it should be something completely new and different, and that’s exactly what the show is. Channel 4 has selected groups of different people across the country, and placed cameras on top of their television sets. They’re then told to watch certain programmes, and talk about it in front of the telly. Sounds like a boring show, but the commentaries these people (who are just like you and me) give are often downright hilarious. As well as saying what we’re all thinking, they make jokes out of the ridiculous stuff you see on TV, which makes it even funnier.
As you keep watching the show, you’ll inevitably get to know them and have your favourites. “The Posh People” are a couple from Kent, and they live in a big house. However, they’re nearly always drinking, so they’re extra funny. Their accents are sometimes so posh you can’t understand what they’re saying, because it turns into a great mumbling slur. They’ve become so popular, they were guests on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man!
Then there are the two sassy ladies from London, who like to eat good food and dance around a bit. They are so very vibrant, you can’t help but smile with them. Also in London are the Tapper family, who are clearly very close, but their defining characteristic is the volume at which they talk to each other.
There are also rather a lot of people from the North on the show. The most entertaining family are the Moffatts, whose daughter Scarlett often makes witty remarks about the things she sees before her. You also have two people who watch from a static caravan, and a family with many dogs (and always display sweet treats, tempting us to come in and join them). Then there are the Siddiqui family, who live in Derby and question the logic of many of the things we watch.
Although the Northerners are more outspoken and vibrant, some of the Southerners hold their own well. Unfortunately there aren’t any people from Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland yet, but I’m sure there will be in time. In Reading, there are a group of flatmates. Further West in Wiltshire, a new couple has been introduced, but their conversation is so monotonous Buzzfeed has deemed them the “Amazingly Dull” couple. Well, they’re not wrong…
So why is the show so popular? Perhaps because it’s so relatable – lots of us like to comment on stuff we watch, and it’s comforting to see that people up and down the country are thinking exactly the same thing. Gogglebox tells us that it’s okay to be the one person that’s not obsessed with Game of Thrones, or Star Wars, or whatever, because there are other people out there who are also not captivated by the idea. It shows us that despite all the media hype about the breakdown of families, nothing brings us together more than a little conversation in front of the telly.
