Once we get our exams out the way, many of us have a nice long summer to look forward to. Hooray! If you’re going anywhere nice, that’s wonderful, or if you’re just chilling in the UK you’re in for a relaxing summer. But what if traditional British weather takes a turn for the worst, and you’re stuck indoors on a rainy day? How will you entertain yourself? (Other than video games, of course!)
1. Go to your local cinema. There are going to be loads of great films this summer, so you’ll have plenty of choice. It’s a really nice experience – grab some food before you go, though, as cinemas charge stupid money for popcorn and chocolate. Sit back and relax, find out about the latest movies, and forget the world for a while.
2. If you’re feeling fit, check out your local sports centre/gym/swimming pool to see what activities are there. They often run classes, workshops and sessions in the holiday for bored kids like us, and they’re a good way to have fun whilst exercising.
3. Try learning something new. Sounds like a cliché, but the internet is a wonderful place to do this. On Youtube, you can find tutorials for anything, and they’re pretty good. Whether you want to learn a new dance move, baking technique or video game cheat, there’s something for everyone.
4. Organise a game day with your friends. This doesn’t have to be video games. Board games like Monopoly can be thrilling, and of course they last for hours. If you’re feeling nostalgic, play hide and seek around your house, as you would have done when you were younger. Don’t forget card games!
5. Indoor waterparks - If you’re lucky enough to live near one of these, definitely go. They’re super fun, and swimming is one of the best ways to exercise, as you use all your muscles. Attractions can include big slides, relaxing lazy rivers, wave machines and jacuzzis, so you’re in for a great day.
6. Or, if you’d prefer something a little more refined, try theatre shows. If you live close to a major theatre, many productions offer matinee times (i.e. early afternoon shows), so you can see a bit of classy entertainment during an afternoon.
7. If you’re young enough/short enough to get in, indoor play areas are a blast from the past! All those ball pools, slides and soft climbing equipment are a dream come true.
8. See your family and friends you haven’t seen for a while. They might give you free food, which is usually a good thing!
9. If you’re passionate about arts, crafts, writing, drawing etc. then a rainy day is a perfect opportunity to work on your skills. You never know – could be useful in future!
10. Find things to do for the next sunny day. Ever get a beautiful day, but no idea what to do with it? Now’s your chance to find things to do the next time an opportunity arises. Go to the countryside, plan a picnic, or maybe even go to the beach. Doing a little research will make your summer so much more memorable.
