Here we are, the final three “quick and easy meals” in this Top Ten series! We’ve already learned how to make a variety of dishes from across the world, but now we’ll return to something a little bit closer to home, and possibly a bit more appealing to inexperienced cooks/people of a younger age/people who like junk food a bit too much.
8. Pasta bake. You can add almost anything you want to a pasta bake, which gives you an incredible amount of choice! There is almost too much choice – you might end up going for just cheese and tomato because you can’t decide, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Firstly, boil pasta and frozen vegetables in a saucepan for about ten minutes. Whilst this is boiling, you can make up the sauce. You can make a cheese sauce to have a macaroni cheese type dish, but tomato sauce means you have a nice balance between the cheese and the flavour of the tomato. You can also use pesto, a basil sauce – don’t be frightened to try it! Add some bits of meat or Quorn as well, if you’d like. Put some grated cheese over the top and bake for 15/20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted. Enjoy – there’s really nothing better than melted cheese.
9. Bangers and mash. You can buy frozen mashed potato, which tastes just as good (if not better) than homemade mash and can be cooked in the microwave. Then, all you’ll have to do is cook some vegetables and fry/grill some sausages (meat or vegetarian works just fine), and make some gravy from some granules. It really couldn’t be easier. If you like, you can switch it up a bit by cooking some frozen Yorkshire puddings, or buying a pre-made toad in the hole. You’ll feel like you’ve eaten a nice, home cooked meal that was cooked with a lot of love and affection, but in reality it didn’t take much time at all.
10. Homemade pizza! Everyone loves pizza, right? Well, did you know it’s a lot easier to make than you might have thought? You can buy pre-made pizza bases, but you can also buy something called a “pizza base mix”. This contains all the necessary ingredients to make pizza dough, but it only needs about 5 minutes to rest. If you make it from scratch, it might need anything up to two hours to allow the yeast to work! Make up a batch of the pizza base mix according to the instructions, and once it’s ready, roll it out into a circle. Make up some tomato sauce from a tin of chopped/liquidised tomatoes, herbs and spices etc. Spread this over the base, and finish with some grated cheese and some sliced mozzarella. If you like, you can add your favourite toppings, but a plain and simple Margherita is just as nice too.
So, if you ever have to cook for yourself, you have lots of great meal ideas! However, these meals have a dual purpose, as they are really fun to make with your family. Why not ask your parents to help you? It’ll be a nice way to spend an afternoon, plus you’ll get to eat something really delicious at the end of it. Worth the work, I’d say!
