Tongue Twisters

Tongue Twisters

When first moving to Italy, I taught my friends some English tongue twisters and, in exchange, they told me some Italian ones – known as ‘scioglilingue’. Why not give them a go yourself – I still find a few of them incredibly difficult!

Trentatre Trentini entrarono a Trento—tutti e trentatre trotterellando.

Thirty three people from Trentino enter (the town of) Trento—all thirty three are trotting.

Sotto la panca la capra campa sopra la panca la capra crepa.

Upon the bench the goat lives, under the bench the goat dies.

A variation of this tongue-twister is:

Sopra la panca la capra campa, sotto la panca la capra crepa

On the bench, the goat lives, under the bench the goat dies

Under the building there is a crazy dog; here, crazy dog, a piece of bread.

A piece of pizza that stinks in the well of the ragged fool.

Apelle, son of Apollo, made a ball of chicken skin and all the fish came to the surface to see the ball of chicken skin made by Apelle, son of Apollo, but that ball of chicken skin fell down the hill, into a spring. now it is broken, that ball of chicken skin made by Apelle, son of Apollo.

Note: ’Mo’ is a word in dialect and it means ‘now’. Also, 'Na and rott' stand for ‘una and rotto’.

For you the priest lost thirty teeth inside a cave.

Apelle, son of Apollo, made a ball out of chicken skin. All the fishes came to the surface to see the ball made of chicken skin by Apelle, son of Apollo.

A variation is:

Apollo's son Apelle made a ball out of the skin of a chicken, all the fishes came to the top of the sea to see the ball made out of chicken skin by Apollo's son Apelle.

Tre tigri contro tre tigri, tre tigri contro tre tigri ...

Three tigers against three tigers, three tigers against three tigers….

The last of the tongue twisters is in a dialect spoken in Milan:

Ti che te tachet i tac, tacum i tacc! Mi tacat i tac a ti? Tacheti ti i to tacc, ti che te tachet i tacc!

You, whose job is to stick on heels (to a shoe), stick my heels on! I should stick the heels for you? Stick your own heels since you stick heels on.

I hope you enjoyed the frustration of trying to say all of the tongue twisters correctly!
