They're Alive!

They're Alive!

They’re Alive!

It was the beginning of the summer holidays, and I was extremely bored. I would go to the park, but my mum says it’s too far for me to go alone, and all my friends are on holiday. I wish we could go somewhere exotic, but my parents say it’s really expensive to go in the summer, and it takes a long time to book and pack.

One day my mum came to my bedroom and asked, “What are you going to do today then?”

“Nothing,” I replied shortly and lamely.

“Well, why don’t you draw something for me? I know you love to draw.” At that point she left my room to make lunch.

I perked up at the thought. It was true. I loved drawing. I had folders and folders of drawings from when I was younger, and I’ve improved a lot since. Why hadn’t I thought of it before?

I took a few sheets of blank paper from my special drawing pad, took a sharp pencil, and started drawing a dog. Yes, an ordinary dog, with a few black patches, but I made it have a happy expression, its tail wagging furiously. At one point, I thought its tail really was wagging. I laughed to myself. Drawings can’t move. But then I looked closer, and saw it really was wagging. Gasping, I threw the piece of paper away onto the floor in shock.

I was still thinking about whether I had really only imagined it, when I saw a paw come out of the paper! Soon, I had right in front of me, with its tongue lolling and its tail wagging furiously, the same dog I had drawn.

Then, my real dog had barged its way into my room, Harley, a black Labrador, and started sniffing cautiously at the drawn dog. He wasn’t frightened in the slightest, and bounded over to Harley playfully. Surely, if my own dog sensed that my drawing was moving, then I can’t be hallucinating!

Suddenly, I had an idea. If one of my drawings could move and come to life, would others do the same if I drew them on the same piece of paper?

Quickly, I grabbed the paper on the floor, and discovered it empty. Oh right, the dog’s escaped from the paper, that’s why.

Just for experimentation, I drew a few butterflies, and soon enough, they were flying around my room. I was careful enough not to draw any dragons or witches, otherwise I would be flattened or cast into a frog in seconds. But I did draw a fairy. Yeah, yeah, babyish, I know. However, somehow they seem magical. I was glad I invited her. We went flying around the room for ages, until I felt I could fly out through the window and leave the whole world behind us.

I also drew some flowers. I expected them to just stand there, really, as normal flowers do. But instead, they were dancing wildly, waving their leaves and shaking their petals, whilst the dog was barking madly, bounding about the room.

It was when my mum suddenly opened the door to my room, that everyone suddenly disappeared. I fell unexpectedly onto the floor, clutching the precious piece of paper.

“What are you doing on the floor?” my mum shook her head, smiling. “Anyway, what have you drawn?”

I showed her the paper, full of flying butterflies, plants and flowers, a fairy in a thoughtful position, and a lolloping spotted dog in the act of jumping.

“That’s great, darling. And you’ve made it look so realistic,” she praised.

“It’s almost as if they’re alive,” I said.

And when my mum wasn’t looking, the fairy winked at me. I giggled quietly.

Now I knew how to have fun during the summer holidays!
