The Twins at St. Clare’s is the first in a six book series written by Enid Blyton about twin sisters and their six years of senior school together. As you might have guessed, this book follows the twins on their first year of secondary school, at aged eleven. The twins, named Patricia and Isabel O’Sullivan, went to a private primary school and really wanted to go to the private secondary school that they know their friends are attending.
However, their parents think the school they want to go to will make them spoilt and snobby and so send their girls to a less expensive school named St. Clare’s. Because the twins don’t want to go to St. Clare’s, they vow to be the most troublesome students in the school and, as you’ll discover, do a great deal towards that end.
St. Clare’s is a school founded strongly on the idea that you earn respect of younger students as you grow older, and the 5th and 6th year students are by far the most important in the school. This is a shock to Patricia and Isabel, ex-head girls, particularly when they find they have to do such tasks as shine the 6th years shoes – especially when they realise how bad at these chores they are!
At their old school, the twins were particularly good at hockey and tennis being captains of both teams, however at St. Clare’s they only play lacrosse! This initially annoys the twins, but eventually they realise that Isabel is actually very good at the sport! She even ends up on the school lacrosse team!
Quickly after joining the school and after some adjustment, the twins make some amazing, and equally troublesome, friends who they play endless pranks on and with. The girls particularly enjoy playing pranks on their teachers and quickly learn which ones are easy to tease and those to avoid.
The girls wish to be noticed and to be somebodies by the time they leave the school is evident throughout all their actions in the book. This leads to some triumph but also some embarrassment. However, by the end of the book it is obvious to the reader that the two girls have learned an incredible amount during their first year at St. Clare’s, not only in terms of education, but also in terms of character development.
This book is full of cheeky boarding school girls who love to break the rules and want more than anything to become a success. If you’re interested in a comical, old school, good girls meet St. Trinians exchange students kind of vibe, this is the series for you!
