The Road to Recycling

The Road to Recycling

Recycling has become increasingly popular over recent decades as it ensures that the items we no longer use are safely reintegrated into the resources pool. These items will either be transformed into something new or will get cleaned and reused.

The benefits of recycling are very clear: recycling allows us save energy that would otherwise be used on reproducing the same product and it also helps reduce the material going to landfills – as multiple countries have not many landfills left, recycling compensates this issue. As the Earth possesses limited resources, recycling is fundamental for conserving precious raw materials and can also limit the amount of pollution which is involved in the waste disposal process. Having said this, it is evident that not everybody necessarily feels motivated to recycle. There can be multiple reasons behind this rationale but the main cause is that people either don’t know how to recycle or simply can’t be bothered to. In this article therefore we shall cover the benefits of recycling and the differences each of us can make in our daily routine that can help preserve our world!

I personally choose to recycle because I want to help preserve the Earth for future generations whilst also feeling like I am contributing to making the world a better place each and every day. In order to achieve the end target of sustainable development – that is the "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" – recycling is essential.

Multiple resources can be recycled including glass, paper, metal and plastic amongst many others. Below, you can find a short description of the impact recycling each of these materials has on the environment.

Glass and Metal

Glass can be recycled by melting it and remoulding it to make new items. The energy used to transform the glass objects is less compared to the energy necessary to make entirely new glass from raw materials. Metal is also melted and moulded like glass whilst using less energy than creating new metals.

Paper

Unlike glass, the recycling process of paper does not involve any melting, rather the paper is torn into small pieces and then moulded to make new sheets of paper. This also takes up less energy when compared to that used to make paper from trees and is also better for the preservation of trees. The downfall is that paper can only be recycled a few times before it becomes too short, recycled paper therefore is typically used for cardboard or even toilet paper.

Plastic

Almost all types of plastic can be recycled and can be transformed into fleece clothing in order to use less crude oil – a raw material which is required for plastic and is a scarce resource. Another benefit of recycling plastic is that we avoid it going to landfills; all in all, the benefits of recycling by far outweigh the effort of understanding how to recycle. Indeed if we start to think of recycling as a habit I assure you it will come naturally and every day you’ll be making a difference in the world!
