The Quarantine Princess: Part 2

The Quarantine Princess: Part 2

“What now?”

“Anything you want to do!”

“Are we ever going back?”

“Of course, we are. We'll be back before night.”

“So, what are we doing standing around, it's almost evening.” They laughed and ran around the massive green pastures.

As the sun retired its light, the girls turned around to head home. They walked home and talked about the amazing day they had. They climbed the tree. Veronica and Serena used ribbons to swing into the open window one after the other. They then sat on the bed and hid all evidence of their quest. They laughed as they heard someone approach the corridor outside the room.

King Edward rose to his feet. His long emerald robe wrapped around his body. He brushed his dark brown hair out of his face. His hair stopped at his shoulders. “Good morning daughter and good morning Veronica. How was your day yesterday?”

“Good.”

“Fine thank you, we were planning my sweet sixteen.”

“Well, that is rather peculiar as a deathly disease is going around. A disease that you happened to have. I wonder how it happened, Serena.” He stared at her directly. She looked down and was careful not to look him in the eyes.

“I’m sorry, father. It's just...”

“Just that our kingdom is doomed now. Is that good enough for you?”

“I just wanted to know what it would be like outside.”

“Well know you do.” he lowered his voice and muttered to himself, “She will never give us the cure now.”

“Who father?”

“No one. Go to your room now!” he stormed and outstretched his arm in the direction of her room. Serena turned around and walked into her room with her head down. Veronica curtseyed in front of the King and turned around to leave when she was beckoned back. “Please take care of her.” She nodded and ran to catch up to the melancholy princess.

As they entered the room, Serena threw herself onto the bed. Veronica sat down beside her after carefully straightening her dress and spoke calmly to reassure her. “Don’t worry. It can’t get any worse right?” Veronica, however, was wrong. Very wrong. Extremely wrong. Around the world people were suffering from this disease. It started as a flu and intensified slowly but painfully. Many people had managed to recover on the edge of death while others gave in.

King Edward looked through the statistics and pointed it out to his team. Death rates were exceedingly higher than usual. “It is all happening again. It has comeback to finish its job that it couldn’t complete in 1666. Our people’s lives are in danger. Our fate lies in her merciless hands.”

“What more can we do? She’s the only one.”

Shhh!” Veronica whispered as they watched from their hiding positions.

“It’s too risky. She is too cunning. It could be a trap. With me gone, it is a perfect chance to swoop in and take the throne.”

“Can it be anyone else?”

“In the book it states, A member in the line for the throne must be the one to confront the witch.”

“I am your brother; surely I could go while you protect the kingdom.”

“Now that Serena is here, you are no longer in line. Serena must not know about this. It is too dangerous for her. If she finds out, she will try to go and fix everything. A clueless, young and innocent princess wandering into the lair of a witch would just be too easy for her.”

Serena pulled Veronica back into her room and lowered her voice, “We’re going to …"

Veronica interrupted, “There is no stopping you from going to the witch, right?” Serena simply nodded enthusiastically.
