The Quarantine Princess: Part 1

The Quarantine Princess: Part 1

Behind her were two guards – one on either side. Each wore silver shiny armour and accompanied the defiant princess.  They had a helmet covering their faces; however, the girls easily identified them. The two guards had become very fond of their princess since they were first assigned their new role. There was something different about that baby that lit up the room every time that she smiled. Her energetic character created a joyful atmosphere for those who surrounded her.

“Morning,” a quiet voice whispered.

“Good morning, your majesty.” She stood up with a straight posture and spoke in a mockingly posh accent as she held her long amethyst dress and curtseyed.

“Same to you” the voice laughed as she rolled out of bed and fell onto the floor. They both began guffawing. Veronica helped her up and they both sat on the bed. They talked throughout the morning and afternoon and then parted once more to sleep. They still kept to the required safety guidelines as they did everyday ever since Serena was diagnosed.

Serena had been diagnosed at birth with a very rare disease that was currently uncurable. It was contagious. It was threatening. It was back once again. A disease so powerful that it could end the world once and for all. Luckily it didn’t finish the job last time. However, if Serena was to leave the house and interact with other people, they would easily catch it and it goes on from there. She has been informed about this every time she and Veronica tried to escape. Lecture after lecture. Talk after talk.

Time went by. New faces. New people. New things. A birthday was around the corner for Serena and it was one worth celebrating. It was her sweet sixteen. She talked endlessly about it. She talked non-stop. It would go on forever. She and Veronica had planned it completely. As she was 15 (soon to be 16), she wanted an adventure but she wasn’t like the girls on TV. Her mum told her repeatedly that she was special but she wanted to have her adrenaline pumping. She wanted to explore the world and its mysteries and have strange yet memorable encounters. Veronica wanted it as well so they planned attempts consequently which failed until once they did it.

The girls ran giggling. They stopped and looked back. Their smiles faded away. Veronica held Serena’s hand and said, “This is what we have always wanted. It’s not like we are running away forever. We'll be back by tomorrow and we will prove to the that we can go outside safely.”

“Yeah!”

“Then let’s go.” They ran together across the street while horses neighed loudly at her. They ran without looking around themselves for they were never taught how to cross the road. There was a field in the distance. They rolled down its hills and played there. Their party slowly came to an end as Serena asked, “What now?”
