About Me: Hello, I'm Dabbie (short for Dabeluchi). I am a student at Dartford Grammar School for Girls. I love reading mystery books, and solving the mystery with the author. I hope you enjoy reading my stories.
Dear Diary,
For the past six years, I have been testing Signor Galvani’s theory – that the nerve in a frog’s leg responds to electricity: signified by the leg twitching when a current went through it. I haven’t just tested it but mastered and expanded his thoughts on “animal electricity”. The force that flows in your nerves, the frog’s and in lightning is the same. This is my hypothesis – explanation behind my creation.
I remember how this all started. I was fourteen, in Geneva. It was a night just like this, stormy. About 20 yards away from my house, there was an oak tree. A great old oak tree. Although, it had been there for over three hundred years, it was still green and strong. I had climbed, sheltered and covered my initials in it. During the storm, I opened the door to look at the lightning. It was a sight to see! The tree lit up in a series of bright colours, flash after flash, colour after colour. Then, the tree was swallowed by a flame. It all happened so quickly, all that was left was a burnt tree stump.
This made me think – imagine what that power could do. I thought about it. How the tree died. That reminded me of life and death. Imagine if we could bring the dead back to life! So I decided to study and harness the power of lightning. I will use the electricity from the storm to reanimate life. And it will all happen tomorrow when the storm arrives. Can’t wait!
It is all going as planned. All except one thing. Father has lung disease and about to die! And now Elizabeth is here; she can’t see my creation. Elizabeth has told me that I can either stay and finish my experiment or go and be with my father as he dies.
I don’t think Elizabeth understands my position. I’ve been working on this for six straight years. I have finally mastered it. I want to show the university what I have used their supplies for. And then they will regret what they did. Just wait, they will all see.
But what kind of son would I be – not being at his father’s side when he was needed most. Was the experiment more important? Or am I “selfish”? Did Elizabeth have it all wrong? Or did I? Couldn’t this happen on another day!
Today I found out something rather interesting! Clerval had come over and explained that the other students from the university think that I am a “wizard”. How absurd! Me, a wizard! Nonsense! Just because I live alone and rarely allow guests and live in a tall crooked house doesn’t mean I am a wizard. I just chose to live differently to them.
Clerval really liked my project. It was really nice to finally show it off to someone. If I am honest, it is a little irritating having to explain everything. He sometimes gives a look that makes it seem like I am talking in another language. I use this as an advantage in my jokes. I guess that is what happens when you have a brain as big as mine. But I am glad to have a friend like him.
