The Empty Mirror (Part 2)

Before I had time to answer, the Mum burst in, holding a tray of beans on toast, hot chocolate and a little lily on the side. Strangely enough, I think I vaguely remember my Mum doing the same. Or is it just me?

“Lily, what are you doing here, I called you three times,” the Mum said impatiently. I was a bit shocked at that. Here’s a girl, with the same name, the same size bedroom, and her Mum doing the same with the tray. And I was here. Why was I here?

“Sorry Mummy, I was just looking at that,” Lily said, pointing at something.

When I realized that that “something” was me.

I was stunned. I didn’t know what to say. What was she going to do now? Throw me out?

“Honey, there’s nothing there,” the Mum said with a puzzled expression.

I froze. Who was I?! Did I even exist? Obviously, because then the little girl wouldn’t be able to see me. But then, why didn’t the Mum see me? Oh God, where is my normal life? I thought desperately, almost in tears.

“Oh, never mind, Mummy,” Lily sighed. “I know!” Her face lit up. “Let’s go and see some pictures! I always loved looking at me!”

“Ok,” The Mum chuckled. “While you are eating, I’ll bring them up then we can look at them.”

While Lily nibbled away, I decided to have a closer look at her. Could she really see me?

Suddenly Lily whipped around in my direction, and tapped her nose at me. Yep. She can see me, alright.

But then she quickly turned away from me as soon as her Mum opened the door with their album. They both sat down on her bed and flicked the pages open.

As they were looking, I, almost glided over to them. Was I a ghost, or not?

“Ooohh, my Mammy Jammy,” Lily sang loudly. That’s exactly what I called my Mum!

“Now, now, Lilianna Bay Wade, you know you’re not allowed to shriek that loudly, you’ll wake up the others,” The Mum said sternly.

Now I gasped out loud; I saw Lily’s eyes flicker silently in my direction in alarm. That’s my name! My full name! So, this is… me??

Then, suddenly, oh, so suddenly, before I could fully comprehend that everything was linked to me, the whole room dimmed out… fading. I only heard the last words of little Lily, “No! Don’t goooo…”

Darkness. Then I saw a spot of light far away, like the end of a long tunnel. And everything came zooming forwards. Unexpectedly, I found myself in front of… my mirror. The empty mirror. Well, not so empty anymore. I was standing in front of it! And it was evening again! My room was back! Oh, the glory!

It turns out little Lily was me. And the room she was in was my room. And her Mum was my Mum! So it was a… flashback?
