The Empty Mirror

I scrabbled about in my bag for the keys. I pushed them into the lock and twisted. Sighing, I slumped onto my bed in the empty house, bored. Bored, bored, bored. Mum was at work, Dad in a meeting. Unfortunately, I’m a single child. The only comforting organism in the house was my reflection.

Seeing as I was bored, I decided to have a little one-person makeover, tidy up a little. As I’m 15, I have to be self-conscious of my looks. Unenthusiastically, I walked over to my tall mirror, which took up a whole wall.

As I lifted my head, goose bumps prickled my arms, and I felt an icy chill settle between my shoulders.

I wasn’t there.

I jiggled about, moved my arms, everything. Not even the sign of a finger flinch.

I pinched myself, slapped myself, to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Nothing. Reality suddenly dug in. And deep. I was alone. No-one around. And my reflection wasn't where it should be. Doesn’t something sound a bit… out of place?

Suddenly, I heard the rustle of duvets. I froze. I guess I wasn’t alone. I whipped round to see a little girl in my bed.

“W-what are you doing in my bed?” I asked cautiously. Nothing happened. No reply. After a minute or two’s silence, I realized that it was supposed to be 6 o’clock in the evening. So why did it look like it was morning outside?

I glanced back at the little girl, who was now stirring and yawning. She looked familiar, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it; she looked about 5 years of age.

As my eyes snapped back open to reality, I noticed that this bedroom was the same size and shape as my one. Just a little differently decorated.

When she slipped her bunny slippers on (similar to the ones I had when I was younger), I heard a woman from downstairs shouting, “Breakfast is ready!”

Breakfast? Wasn’t it evening a few second ago?

But I couldn’t carry on pondering, because what the little girl was doing, was catching my eyes.

She was looking straight at me. I looked behind me to see if there was something interesting there. Nothing.

But I wasn’t expecting what she said next.

“Who are you?”

To be continued.
