If you’re looking for something new to watch, then look no further. I’m going to compile a list of the best children’s and young adult shows to watch, including newer tv shows and also classic shows from the 90’s and early 2000’s.
1) Young Dracula - Young Dracula is a BBC show that ran for five series, and in that time, gained something of a cult following. The show focuses on Count Dracula and his two children when they move away from Transylvania to the UK. As such, the Count has to deal with lots of modern problems, like TV, the kids going to school, and not hunting peasants! Vlad, the Count’s son is the primary protagonist, but his sister Ingrid and the Count also have major parts. It’s a show that mixes both comedy and the supernatural, and is well worth a watch. You can find it on DVD or on youtube.
2) The Queen’s Nose - The Queen’s Nose was first aired in 1995, and ran for 7 series. It was loosely adapted from a novel, and told the story of a magic fifty-pence coin that granted the owner fifty wishes. Naturally, this is an ode to the moral, ‘be careful what you wish for,’ as chaos invariably ensues for some reason or another after a wish is made. This show is a really great drama that explores lots of different themes through the use of the coin, and all the characters are well acted. There are also many elements of comedy in the show, and a good sense of character development. You can watch this show on youtube or on DVD.
3) Hetty Feather - Another BBC show that began in 2015, and is still airing today. It is unconfirmed as to whether there would be another series following series 3. The show is an adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s book. Set in Victorian Era London, this show is a refreshing change from cliched kids dramas where the biggest issue is whether they have the latest phone model. Hetty is in a foundling hospital where she is routinely mistreated by a fierce and devious matron, who tries desperately to thwart Hetty’s attempts to expose her misdeeds, and find her birth mother. This show is on CBBC, BBC Iplayer and is available on DVD.
4) My Parents are Aliens - An offering from CITV that has grown to be a favourite of children and adults alike. This show lasted for eight series, making it one of the longest running children’s shows. The show focuses on two aliens, Brian and Sophie Johnson, two aliens stranded on earth, who decide to adopt children to ‘fit in.’ These three children discover their adoptees’ secret, and try to stop anyone else from finding out, as they come to like living with them. There are lots of laughs, as Brian and Sophie’s behaviour continually embarrasses the children, and there are also touching emotional moments. You can watch this on CITV or on youtube.
