The Bermuda Triangle (sometimes also referred to as the Devil's Triangle) is a part of the Atlantic Ocean between Florida and Mexico. For an unknown reason there have been a great number of ships and planes disappearing without explanation in this region. So how is this possible? Some scientists say that there may be a strange magnetic anomaly causing compasses to fail whilst some people argue that methane eruptions from geysers in the ocean floor may suddenly be effecting the denseness of the sea and thus ships become too heavy and sink though this does not explain aeroplanes. Some conspiracy theorists even believe that there are technologically advanced beings either beneath the sea or in space that abduct some of the people travelling through the area.
One of the greatest mysterious losses is that of the USS Cyclops, a US coal carrying boat that was travelling from El Salvador to Maryland and after stopping to refuel at Barbados,which was never seen again. Not only was there no shipwreck ever found, no distress call was ever sent either, it is as though the ship simply vanished. Another mystery is the missing flight NC16002. It was a DC-3 passenger plane that vanished on the night of December 28, 1948, during a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami, Florida. The weather was fine with no issues recorded so there is no logical explanation as to what happened to the plane and even had it crashed for some reason, no wreckage has ever been found. Much alike the USS Cyclops it literally vanished from the face of the Earth.
Another mystery of the triangle is that of the lost squadron, flight 19. A Lieutenant Taylor was taking some students up on a mission to fly in a circuit around the islands near Florida, practise their bombing and return home. Unfortunately Taylor became hopelessly lost as his compass stopped working and by the time the US command worked out where he was the bad conditions of a storm prevented them from contacting him. Apparently one of the students knew which direction to go in but Taylor refused to listen and perhaps doomed them all. The likelihood is that when the planes ran out of fuel they would have crashed into the sea and sunk due to their weight. A rescue mission was sent out anyway but the 5 fighter planes were not found and one of the two planes sent out to rescue them was even lost. Reports suggest that the mariner plane on the rescue mission which went missing exploded as they had pressurised gas cabins and the crew might have lit a cigarette inside. Indeed US coast guard reported seeing an explosion out at sea sometime after the two mariners set off on the rescue mission but due to bad weather could not investigate at that time.
The likelihood is that the five Avenger fighter planes and missing mariner all crashed and sunk too deep before US coast guard could reach the scene. However, it adds to the mystery of the area and the story inspired the alien film, ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’. Five Avenger fighters were found in later years under water near the Florida coast but their serial numbers did not match that of Taylor’s missing squadron. Many Avengers crashed off the East Coast during the Second World War so it is not surprising that there may be many down there still. Ultimately it adds to the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, and whether you believe it or not, a few legends are always fun!
