Organising a talent show is a lot more work than some of the other fundraising ideas we have given you so far this year, however it is a very rewarding and effective way to raise money, and is perfect for those who like a bit of a challenge. Holding a talent show will probably need the help of your parents or teachers to make sure it’s a success. For example, if you do it in school, it saves you the cost of hiring out a hall – you might be able to perform at lunchtime or after school in the school hall! You also need to consider whether you want to hold auditions and what budget you want to set yourself for awarding prizes.
This is our suggested step by step guide to pulling off a talent show!
1) Ask your teachers if it’s a possibility; book out any rooms for auditions at lunchtimes over 2 or three days and book out a hall to do the final show in.
2) Put flyers up around the school and in registers, advertising talent show auditions.
3) Gather a panel of judges to talent spot at auditions.
4) Carry out the auditions and pick 10-15 final contestants.
5) Inform the selected contestants of the day of the show, preferably a week or two in advance so you can advertise the show and get as many people as possible to attend.
6) Put flyers up around the school and in registers, advertising the talent show.
7) On the day of the show, arrive at the venue at least 10 minutes early to set up seats for the audience.
8) Ask for a small fee to get into the hall – around 20-50p. If you’ve advertised well the number of people who come to watch will ensure you get a good amount of money.
9) Award the winning talent with their prize – this could be anything from a box of chocolates to a gift voucher.
10) Count up your funds and send them off to your chosen charity.
The help of a teacher will ensure that this process runs as smoothly as possible, so make sure you ask nicely about it. You don’t have to do it in school though; you could do it at a local club or in your local community too. You could even get teachers to audition for the talent show to bring in more curious people who want to see their teachers’ secret talents!
Another clever idea to raise more money could be to combine your cake sale and talent show to make a super-fundraiser. Having an interval in your talent show, like there is in a real production, provides the perfect opportunity to sell refreshments to make extra money for your chosen charities.
