1) Dancing in the Street - Martha Reeves - A truly iconic song that everybody somehow knows the words too. The lyrics talk of having a nationwide party, with everyone coming out to - surprisingly- dance in the streets. The riff is catchy, and it is a Soul song, meaning a well-written horn section and powerful vocals to draw you in.
2) These Days - Maverick Sabre - If you’re looking for a relaxed summer song, this is the track for you. Sabre’s vocals are rich and soulful, and they work very well over the elongated chords and the almost lazy-seeming melody, which seems to reflect the sense of time stagnating and almost dripping slowly along in summer. This contrasts Sabre’s impassioned pleas in the chorus with the lush strings that come in.
3) The Death of You and Me - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - Again, a song that seems to be the epitome of Summer. It too has a sense of time slowing down and warping with the summer heat. The song has catchy acoustic guitar coupled with woodwind instruments for a bright and breezy sound.
4) Drifting in and Out - Porcelain Raft - A song with beautiful electric guitar at the forefront and mellow vocals that seem almost faded and distant, as if a memory. The song uses distortion creating a hazy vibe, and has an uplifting chord progression before the end of the song.
5) Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer - A 90’s tune that still remains a classic. It has an addictive bassline adoring whimsical lyrics about young love. The song uses imagery particularly well too, creating musings of dancing under the light of fireflies…
6) Bright Lights Bigger City - Cee Lo Green - This song uses Billie Jean’s bassline, so how can it not be a hit? Cee lo uses his distinctive voice to sing of all the possibilities of the big city, whilst being flanked by a rich horn section and strings.
7) Stone Cold Sober - Paloma Faith - Faith’s first single, wherein she sings about herself being ‘wilder than the wind,’ and of herself being like a storm. A song of female independence that showcases Faith’s vocal talents and is insanely catchy.
8) Did it Anyway - Laura Vane and the Vipertones - A neo-jazz song, with a memorable horn section and stellar vocals. Vane is sassy and witty with her lyrics and the whole song is thoroughly enjoyable with its upbeat chords and jazzy feel.
9) Canned Heat - Jamiroquai - Another 90’s gem, with JJ’s unique vocals and a neo jazz/funk feel. The song has interesting, unusual chords and complex instrument lines, and sings of there being nothing else to do but ‘dance!’
10) A Night Like This - Caro Emerald - If you want a retro vibe this summer, try Caro Emerald. This wonderful, vibrant cover sparkles as it tells of having the most wonderful night. It is filled with lush harmonies and a jazz instrumentation.
