Shipwrecked

Shipwrecked

The gargantuan ship leaned to one side, groaning, like a sick person keeling over. People screamed piercingly. We were sinking in the middle of the sea, with no one to help us. People were dying. Meanwhile, the huge chunk of ice still buried itself deeper and deeper into the bottom of the ship, ripping the seemingly impenetrable material further and further apart. This was a serious matter of life or death. I clutched anything that I could reach, but it always slipped from my feeble grasp. Others were falling into the turquoise depths of the ocean, wearing expressions of horrible astonishment, arms thrown out to the sides.

I needed to grab onto hope, not despair and disbelief. But right now I needed to hold onto something that prevented me from landing in the cruel waves of the perpetual, deep blue sea. Grasping onto the metal hand rails, I could see the ship bending over, with me dangling off like a doll hanging from a dogs’ mouth. Blood pumped fiercely in my head, circulating frantically around my body, my heart beating a mile a minute.

My mind whirred like a broken machine; whizzing and going crazy, thoughts bubbling and fizzing in all directions until my toes softly touched the flat surface of the cold water.

My heart froze rigidly, the blood quietened and my mind now thought of only one thing: I was going to die sinking, where my body would stay, my body would not lie in a grave peacefully, but would rot, floating gently into the inky stripe of darkness below.

Suddenly, my fingers could not seize the metal railing anymore. They were sweaty with worry and soon enough, it slipped out of my clutch. I fell into the stormy sea. I gasped for my life and tried my best to hang on to something, like the tables and deckchairs that had also fallen into the sea. While all this occurred, a heavy storm began to brew. Dark, grey, candyfloss clouds, heavy with rain, gathered like a charm of hummingbirds in one place.

Unfortunately, the waves started to swirl and simmer around me, froth brushing into my face. Hard rain droplets hammered down on top of my head. As soon as the storm had finished; at long, long last, there was nobody to be seen. Just the sharp speck of the rear tip of the ship, sticking up like a needle sitting on the horizon. Right now, my arms and legs were tired from treading water and I felt sick from swallowing too much salty, disgusting water during the storm.

Luckily for me, I eyed a few palm trees in the distance, then sand, then a whole jungle! With a wave of relief washing over me completely, I dragged myself onto the grassy bank. But then, I suddenly felt alone and scared, my family were gone and my... Just then I heard shrill barking that came from the canopy of trees further down. It came closer and closer until I was sure it was going to charge and slam right into me. I was right. A huge wallop of paws thumped me down onto the ground and I was soon coated in horrible drool. Now that smell, I recognise!

It was Shadow, my very own Collie! I had forgotten about him! At least I wasn’t alone and if died of starvation or thirst, at least I would have one of my best friends with me...
