Savvy is a strange but wonderful book by Ingrid Law that explores themes of family and growing up, but in some extraordinary circumstances. The story follows the lives of the Beaumont family from the perspective of thirteen year old Mibs, our protagonist. The Beaumont family are unique in that they all have a particular gift, which they call their Savvy. They grow into their Savvy around the age of thirteen. These skills are truly spectacular. Mibs’ two older brothers for example have the ability to create storms and control electricity! Throughout the novel Mibs is in the dark as to what her Savvy is, but don’t worry, you find out what it is at the end!
The story begins with the family preparing for Mibs’ upcoming thirteenth birthday. However, all their plans are tragically interrupted by the news that their father has been hospitalised in a car accident. Mibs and her siblings are placed in the care of a local Pastor whilst their mother rushes off to the far away hospital in Salina. On her birthday, Mibs’ brother’s turtle, thought dead, comes out of hibernation. Of course, this leads Mibs to think that her Savvy is to wake up animals and people and so sets off on a quest to find her father and wake him up from his coma.
Our plucky protagonist finds a pink sales bus with the name “Salina” on the side and hides in it in the hope that it will take her closer to the hospital in Salina where her father is stationed. Two of her brothers and the Pastor’s two children find her and decide to tag along on the journey as well. So we have five children hiding in the back of a pink van and, as you might have imagined, the van goes the wrong way! On top of this, Mibs discovers that her Savvy isn’t what she thought it was at all!
What will these incredible children do? What will happen to Mibs’ father in the hospital? Will the children ever get to the hospital? And WHAT is Mibs’ Savvy? You’ll have to read this fantastic book to find out! This is an exceptionally heart-warming, coming of age story that is perfect not only for its 9-12 target age range, but for absolutely anyone. Having re-read this book only recently I can tell you that I love it just as much as I did when I first read it when I was 12! I hope you enjoy it and fall in love with the characters as much as I did! Maybe you could send us some creative writing explaining what you think your own Savvy would be? I know I’d enjoy reading it!
