The BFG, or Big Friendly Giant, is a book written by Roald Dahl which was one of my absolute favourite books as a child (and still is!). The story follows a young girl called Sophie, named after Roald Dahl’s own granddaughter, on an extravagant adventure which all starts one night when she can’t sleep. Looking out of the window, Sophie sees a giant blowing things into children’s windows with a strange looking horn. She tries to hide from him, but he sees her, picks her out of the window, and carries her back to his home in Giant Country.
Sophie is incredibly scared at this point in the book, and I think I would be too! Imagine being plucked out of bed by a mysterious looking giant whilst everyone else is asleep! The BFG hides Sophie in his pocket so she can’t see where they’re going. It’s only when they reach his cave in Giant Country that she can begin to ask all the questions bubbling inside of her.
Sophie learns what the BFG was really doing, which was distributing lovely dreams for the children that he had made himself! As wonderful as this sounds, we also learn that the BFG is the only nice giant alive, and a rather small one at that! All the other giants, with purely terrifying names, are evil, people-crunching creatures, who sneak off to different countries each night to steal people to eat for their dinner! As much as the BFG wants to stop them, he can’t, however he does send nasty nightmares their way in the hopes of scaring them off people eating!
That, unsurprisingly, doesn’t work. The nasty giants start to hatch a plan to go to England and eat school children! Sophie realises that some of these children would be her friends at her orphanage and, of course, refuses to let this happen, and with the help of the BFG, hatches a plan to make everything good again! Of course, I can’t tell you what happens in this plan because that would spoil the story!
What I can tell you is that the BFG is one of the kindest giants you’ll ever meet in literature, and Sophie is an incredible young girl with a lot of courage and intelligence. This book will make you laugh, and cry, and hide under your covers, and cheer in delight, that I can promise you – though in what order you’ll have to find out for yourself! It really doesn’t matter what age you are, though this book is probably best suited to 8 to 10 year olds, The BFG will have you hooked! Trust me, give it a try!
