Joe, an old purveyor, hires a group of gangsters, all from different backgrounds, to organize a robbery in a laboratory where a large amount of diamonds will be delivered. However, something goes wrong, because at the time of action, the police was waiting for them on the spot and the survivors, among the robbers who manage to escape capture, find themselves in a warehouse where they are questioning and accusing one another of being the mole who betrayed the group. Nobody trusts anyone.

It may seem weird to comment on two of Tarantino’s colleagues at the start of this review, but pretty much everyone knows or has heard of Tarantino, whereas only a few know Sally Menke and David Wasco. Menke, the mounter and editor of the movie and Wasco, the scenographer are almost unknown. Their work in the making of this movie has been very important, taking into account that the film takes place inside a shed for most of the narration, and the outdoor scenes are pretty much all the frantic action, for which the supposed initial budget of only $ 30,000. It is not just a case if Tarantino, known for being extremely demanding and rigorous,  took them both by his side even in later works when, by the success of film, where he has had access to much higher financial resources, and therefore require the collaboration of more famous professionals from the industry.

In fact, only thanks to the economic help of Harvey Keitel, who, after reading the script he received his wife, believed in the project and offered to contribute to the production of their by investing approximately $ 1.5 million off his own pocket. The versatile Quentin therefore avoided having to shoot his debut movie with the cheapest 16mm format camera and even resort to some friends of the play the protagonists’ roles.

Reservoir Dogs is the first authorial work of Quentin Tarantino behind the camera and precedes Pulp Fiction, which presents some themes and techniques that Tarantino will often use in his later productions. In this gaunt, fierce, violent and lightning debut, the author gives a great show of expressive talent with which it was proposed to international attention, even more than in the USA. in short this was a bit similar “Duel” by Steven Spielberg, shot on a shoestring and with one interpreter, which was the film through that revealed the young director’s talents. In the case of Spielberg, however, stylistically, that movie has remained an isolated example if compared to his later productions such as “E.T.”, “Indiana Jones” and “Titanic”; Reservoir Dogs, instead, already demonstrates the consistency of the themes, besides the full maturity in personality and art.

When the film was shown for the first time, however, at the Sundance Film Festival, it attracted some controversy, both due to the scenes of violence in it, and for the charges of plagiarism against a work unknown to most in Europe (but not in US) as “City on Fire” by Ringo Lam. Besides, who would expect from Tarantino innovation is astray. He is very good instead to reinterpret and elevate maniacally others' mediocrity and at the highest level to raise even the so-called cinema of series B, thereby giving respectability to which otherwise could never aspire.
