To follow on from the previous article, this article will now discuss the final external factors which cannot be ignored when learning about how racism is linked to underachievement for pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds. The pupils’ families’ backgrounds and social class are important external factors to consider as they may affect their achievements in education, even though no racism or discrimination is taking place. This is because if their family is of a working class background, they may not be able to afford for their child to go on school trips or visit museums, and may have material deprivation such as having no equipment. This results in pupils with ethnic minority backgrounds to have cultural deprivation which will limit their knowledge and may cause them to underachieve. In addition, the pupils’ families’ backgrounds may have an effect on how well they achieve in education.
This is linked with Ken Pryce’s study who sees the family structure as contributing to the under achievements of black Caribbean pupils in Britain. It is argued that Asian pupils are higher achievers as their culture is more resistant to racism whereas black Caribbean culture is less cohesive and less resistant to racism. Also, he claims that the experience of slavery meant that blacks had lost their language, religion and entire family system. As a result, black Caribbean pupils aren’t doing very well in education due to their family background.
To conclude these three articles on how racism and discrimination cause pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds to under achieve, it has to be noted that some ethnic groups are affected by racism and discrimination more than others. Additionally, racism and discrimination are not solely the reason why non-white pupils underachieve as there are external factors that could have negative effects on their education as well, such as their family structure and social class. Lastly, Indian and Chinese pupils perform better than white pupils, meaning that racism and discrimination cannot have such a great negative impact on their educational attainments.
