Race for Life is an amazing opportunity to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a charity aiming to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. Race for Life is a fundraising event which any boy under 12 years old and all women can participate in. There are many different types of races; 5k, 10k, half marathon or a full marathon, therefore catering for all abilities and Race for Life has become one of the UK’s largest events. For example in 2006, there were 240 races across the UK. There is also a Pretty Muddy race which is a 5k obstacle run, and looks like a lot of fun!
It is really simple to apply; you simply go to the website; raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org, type in your postcode and the nearest events will be shown. Then, all you have to do is type in your details and you can run! Personally, this charity is very close to my heart, and last year I ran the 5k race in Southend, and this year I will be running the 10k race in Chelmsford! I feel like participating in the running event makes you feel like you really have made a difference as you are setting yourself a goal to achieve, having a target both running wise and donation wise. Additionally, the atmosphere when you run is full of energy with people cheering you along, and it definitely makes you feel proud of what you have achieved. When you are running, there is no competition as you feel like you are all in it together, running in one massive team for the same cause.
It is important to note that you do not have to run during these events; you can walk, skip or finish the race in any way that you wish! Also, dressing up is a fun way to get involved even further.
Sponsorship for the race works in two ways: you can either fill in a sponsorship form online and pay in the money that way, or the easiest way for me is to set up a JustGiving page online, which is simple and easy to create and use, and you will be shown how to do this once you have applied for a race. Additionally, it allows you to post your story, pictures and any additional information on your own page, which you can share via social media.
For extra fundraising ideas, the Race for Life website helps you to raise as much money as possible through creating quiz nights, bake sales and nights in for example. The Race for Life app can also be downloaded for free for anyone with a smartphone, which gives more tips for fundraising, training advice and it links to your JustGiving page, so that you can keep on top of your donations!
Lastly, Race for Life Schools is a great way in which schools can participate, and organise races with pupils and staff in both primary and secondary schools. After signing up, a specific day can be chosen, perhaps during a sports day for example, and a distance can also be chosen in order to suit a certain age group or the pupils' abilities.
Race for Life is namely a women’s running event, but the organisation strongly address the fact that they are raising money to help prevent around 200 types of cancer, for both men and women. Also, male volunteers are welcome to help out at the events! Race For Life has proved to be a life-changing organisation, raising over £493 million since it began in 1994 thanks to the kind donations of 6 million people.
Everybody knows someone affected by Cancer, and it's about time this changed! So do not hesitate - get involved either running or volunteering for Race for Life!
