A long time ago in the kingdom of Wodengra lived Queen Damena and King Delioth. They were loved by all their people. The kingdom was one of the most important kingdoms in Heptarchy, which we now call England as it was a beautiful and rich kingdom.

King Delioth was a warrior as well as a king. He fought and protected the kingdom. Their army was also extremely large. Queen Damena was kind-hearted and loving. She helped the children and women. They were loved by all the people of Wodengra. Everybody was happy.

But not everyone was happy. At night, a monster was awoken. Her name was Mandola. She was cursed by Frigga, who is the goddess of love, to look horrifying. She crawled into their royal hall, which is where the soldiers sleep, and in one go gobbled 50 men that night. She kept some for later.

   The news spread all over Wodengra. All their attempts ended in the same way , people getting killed. Mandola carried on this evil plan until there was no happiness left. Everyone seemed hopeless except Damena, who was their queen, she still had joy and hope in her. Damena decided to do something about it. She thought about it over and over again throughout the day.

   The next day, there was an announcement. It was about Damena’s plan. “We can’t keep living in fear. Mandol is a beast but we can stop her. Men have tried. But we need to give some people a chance” she began. There were a few murmurs from the crowd. “I have then decided that I shall choose a group of women to be in my army. That army will be led by no other than… myself.” People began to say things like “Are you sure your highness? Why women? If men can’t then you can’t”. Even King Delioth was quite confused.

    But her decision was final. So early, the next morning she headed off into the village. Damena picked out some women to be on her team. They prepared for their quest. The army were to set off the next week. News spread quickly throughout the land of Wodengra. Everybody heard, including a little black bird. That little black bird was a messenger for Mandola. She was so furious that she then jeopardised the mission by destroying their weapons and making sure they could never leave Wodengra by blocking their entrance and exits.

    The army woke up to find their quest had been ruined by the daemon herself. Everybody gave up except Damena. She then decided to use whatever we had. They used things like spears and sticks. Damena stood outside the castle and in a loud voice she shouted “It is time”. There was an ear-splitting cheer as the army, all armed and fit to fight, went off into the forest. 

    There was no sign of the monster. They tried to stay awake through the cold winter night. Nobody was awake to stop Mandola as she crept over to where a soldier was asleep. Her claws were out ready to attack when Damena slowly and carefully tiptoed over to her. Holding her sword she pierced her from behind. That sword was from Damena. That was the end of Mandola. The kingdom was now saved from her evil clutches.

   From then on, women were accepted into the country’s army and could get as high as captain of the army like Queen Damena. This is the real story of what you may know as Beowulf.
