What can be said about Pulp Fiction that has not already been said by the critics? Nothing, probably, so my task is very difficult, if not impossible, but after having revised it once again with the same pleasure as the first time, it is inevitable to share some views and opinions. This review will be strictly personal and it will not contain any spoilers.

I will start by saying that this is not 'a' movie, is “the” movie and perhaps even the best calling card that the cinema of the past two decades may have used to present itself and its expressive maturity and evolution of film language. The classic work of human artistic creativity that I would, eventually send into space so that other forms of life can receive it and, despite an initial shock, enjoy it as much as I have.

Jokes aside, Quentin Tarantino, who certainly likes not to take himself too seriously, so that the same attitude is also reflected in his movies and enriching them, is certainly the most prominent modern filmmaker of international cinema. This passionate and charismatic movie director with this work and effort has made “Pulp Fiction” an absolute masterpiece.

Pulp Fiction has, primarily, a labyrinthine structure, which, contrary to the nature of the labyrinth that should make it hard for an adventurer to get out, makes the movie somewhat simplify a very meticulous and detailed artwork.           

The structure of the movie is very unclear at first and it is hard to connect all the pieces and scenes together, but, as the viewer progresses through this contradictory labyrinth, the structure becomes to become cohesive and precise. For this reason, I would recommend to watch this film once or twice more after the first view as it becomes more and more appreciable.

The film begins with a banal story, develops it and suddenly jumps onto another story that appears to be extraneous to the previous, which does not make the narration follow the temporal sequence of the events. The new introduced story ends and the narration goes back to its starting point with a 360’ turn that puts the pieces of the story together when it ends again, and a new event is introduced and so on. In this way, Tarantino has been able to show the details and the twists in the story.

This type of structure makes the spectator feel as if he was in a roller coaster even though he’s enjoying the comfort of his stationary chair. The progression of the narration is embroiling and energetic and may create an initial state of confusion, but it also captures the interest of the viewer, who is constantly receiving a mixture of emotions and feelings, which change and develop as the narration progresses and the events are explored in depth.

Another striking aspect of this working method is that, to achieve such a result, Tarantino has not had to use intellectual metaphors and symbolisms that just the most capable and experienced viewers can understand. Through the use of different reading levels he has been able to keep the narration direct immediate, attractive and entertaining without using complex artifices of speech.

This makes it hard to categorise this film. An intricate structure and a simplistic language, like an oxymoron, but with a clear narration that falls into pieces as the different scenes are stitched together. It is hard to just say it is neo-noir comedy, a crime comedy or a black comedy; “Pulp Fiction” is in my opinion a stand-alone movie that doesn’t fall into any category. It is an iconic movie and one of the most complete of Tarantino’s productions, which contains all the main ingredients to make a memorable film.
