Wrapping up the series of places we can’t go, here’s part 4. I hope you’ve enjoyed this little series on restricted locations around the world, and if you have feel free to write some articles of your own! I’m sure there are plenty more secret locations out there that I’m yet to discover, but for now, let’s crack on! As always if you haven’t read the previous articles in this series, go do so now before we get started.

Metro 2, Moscow

 So secret that we’re not even 100% sure it exists, Metro 2 is the name given to a secret underground metro (train line) built or at least begun being built, during the reign of Stalin. Conducted by the KGB the secret underground transport system is apparently still used today by top Russian government officials and the Ministry of Defence. This secret underground train system is said to be even longer and deeper than the known functioning metro system in Moscow which is for use by the public. It makes you wonder what else might exist out there under the ground, hidden to the average person. Urban archaeologists claimed to have found an entrance to the metro in 1994, but their claims were never confirmed. Based on the testimony of various ex Russian officials/presidents it seems likely the system does exist but is apparently unusable and unfinished due to deteriorating conditions/flooding. Then again, given that it’s meant to be secret, that’s what they’d want you to think!

Coca Cola recipe vault, Georgia, United States of America

Coca cola is possibly the most successful drinks company of all time. With a lot of sugar it’s definitely not good for you to drink too often but plenty of people definitely do as millions of coca cola bottles and cans are sold every week. Coca cola are such a powerful company, you might not even know that they basically own Christmas. When you think of Santa Claus/Father Christmas you probably think of a jolly old chap in a red and white furry suit but for many many years Santa was in fact green and white and it was a Coca Cola advert that created the red and white Santa which has stuck! Both the colours and taste of Coca Cola are renowned worldwide, so you can understand why they would want to keep the recipe of their drink a secret to prevent other companies rivalling their immense power and success with the drink. The recipe is supposedly hidden behind a huge vault door in Georgia in the United States of America and guarded by a heavy security presence. You can visit and see the vault, but won’t be getting inside any time soon to make some homemade coca cola!

Surtsey, Iceland

One of the youngest pieces of land in the world this island only rose from the waves in the 1960s after a huge underwater volcanic eruption forced it to the surface. As it is relatively remote and fresh very few people have ever set foot on it or polluted its air and thus it has potentially the world’s most original and unaffected natural habitat. As a result it is closed to the public and only a select few scientists have been allowed to visit the island for the purposes of studying its nature and climate. You’re not really missing out as it’s only a small island with nothing there, but it’s funny to think there’s land that we’re simply not allowed to visit despite it being physically possible for us to do so.
