Welcome to part 3 of my series on places that you actually can’t go (many of which you probably wouldn’t want to anyway!). As always if you haven’t yet read the prior two parts please do go ahead and catch up. Otherwise without further ado, here’s number one:

Svalbard seed vault, Norway

As important as it is difficult to pronounce the Svalbard seed vault in Norway is somewhere you hope no one ever has to go. You see the vault contains a great variety of seeds for plants and crops from all over the world in case some global catastrophe or apocalypse destroys earth’s crops! Think films like 2012 or Day after Tomorrow, those are the situations it would take for this vault to be opened up. Located on the Norwegian Island Spitsbergen the vault contains over 800,000 different seeds and can hold millions. Thankfully, it’s unlikely it will ever need to be used.

Google data centres, multiple locations

As amazing as google is, being able to search for just about anything on the internet means a lot of storage room and google have multiple huge data centres. Of course for a company as big, powerful and important as google it’s no surprise that they like to protect their data centres. Google boasts security checkpoints, barricades, security badges and even eye scanners before you’re allowed permission to enter and so only a select few workers could ever enter. Additionally they claim to have other security defences but will not say what, probably in case anyone trying to break in is planning on countering these defences! Of course google data centres aren’t really somewhere you’ll want to go as it’s just a lot of wires and complicated computer code once you get into it! Or at least that’s how it appears to someone like me who knows nothing about internet data!

Chernobyl, Ukraine

This one you may have heard of through history lessons, or if you’re one our older readers may even have explored in the old video game Call of Duty 4. Chernobyl was home to the worst nuclear power accident of all time. In 1988 an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused radioactive particles to spread over the area, forcing the entire town to be permanently evacuated. 64 people who were originally exposed to the radiation have since been killed and the area is to this day far too dangerous to enter due to lethal radiation levels. Some people have visited Chernobyl for research purposes or just adventurers but you must wear full radiation suits and it is still not advisable due to the danger. We don’t know a lot about radiation still fully but it is incredibly dangerous and invisible so you would only know its presence by using high tech equipment to track radioactive waves in the area. Needless to say, as much as Chernobyl is a fascinating place to visit, the 50,000 people that used to live there were forced to leave their homes due to the danger, so I definitely don’t suggest you go visiting anytime soon!
