Places you can't go! (part 1)

Places you can't go! (part 1)

You may have heard the phrase ‘the world is your oyster’ and it’s certainly true that we are more connected as a planet and able to travel across continents faster and more efficiently than ever before. However, there are still several locations around the world where we cannot go for one reason or another. If you enjoy travelling like me then it’s fascinating to see what’s behind every door and there will always be that interest in the unknown!

Lascaux Caves, France

Taking a trip back over 17,000 years you might have wandered into some of the oldest humans carving paintings into the stone in Lascaux. Their crude drawings seemingly portray animals and shapes, some of which are more commonly found in Africa today than France, raising interesting questions about animal migration over thousands of years. Unfortunately these incredible archaic stone carvings and the cave as a whole is restricted to the public due to toxins produced by mushrooms and fungi growing in the caves. It hasn’t always been the case though as these fungal invasions date to the 1960s, prior to which you could visit the caves. Hopefully one day we can return to this ancient site!

North Sentinel Island, India

Probably somewhere you’re less keen to visit, this completely isolated island is home to a small tribe of natives. Their numbers have been estimated at between 50 and 500 but no one can be sure as they have a history of attacking anybody who attempts to get too close, even throwing rocks and firing arrows. Whilst it is naturally beautiful the island is not particularly distinctive in its terrain for the area but it is incredible to see how such an ancient tribe can still function with hunter gatherer techniques to this day in which skyscrapers and railways rise up around them. One place that is definitely too dangerous to visit any time soon though.

Area 51, United States of America

This one you may well have heard of, Area 51 is a secret US base located in the midst of the Nevada desert, one of the hottest and remote locations on Earth despite being situated in the midst of the US. No one can be certain of the purpose of Area 51 or what it contains bar a select few US government and military officials who work/have access there. They are of course sworn to confidentiality so cannot share the information with anyone, not even their families. The mystery behind this secret base has led to theories of it hosting alien life forms that have crash landed on Earth or even experimental technology and weapons. Either way we’re unlikely to ever find out as the base is very heavily guarded, surrounded by land mines and military defences and personnel.  You can hardly sneak up on the base either as it is located in the midst of a desert! What do you think? Aliens? Secret technology? Evidence of spirits? We’ll never know,  but it’s fun to wonder!
