Physics: Electrostatic Precipatator

Electrostatic Precipitator

What is it?

Power stations usually burn fossil fuels. Smoke is created when these fuels burn. Smoke is made up of tiny solid particles, which can damage buildings and cause breathing difficulties. To stop this from happening, the smoke is removed from extra gases before they pass out of the chimneys. The electrostatic precipitator is the what power stations used in chimneys to do this.

How does it work?
Firstly, the smoke particles pick up a negative charge.
Secondly, the Smoke particles are attracted to the collecting plates, which are earthed or positively charged.
Finally, the collecting plates are knocked to remove the smoke particles, which then fall into a collector.
