Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordon

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordon

Percy Jackson is an ordinary 12 year old, American boy. Or so he thinks. In reality, Percy is a demi-god, a child born of a human mother and a God for a father. On discovering this incredible fact about himself, he travels to Camp Half-Blood in New York, a safe school for demi-gods and part mythical creatures to learn about their powers in an environment safe from all the monsters in the world that are out of kill them. Here, Percy discovers that his father is Poseidon, God of the Oceans, and that he has some small power over water that he will be able to learn to control over time. Poseidon is the brother of Zeus, the God of the Gods, and Hades, God of the Underworld.

During Percy’s stay at Camp Half-Blood, Zeus’s lightning bolt is stolen! Poseidon is blamed for this theft and Zeus demands that the lightning bolt be returned to Mount Olympus before the Summer Solstice. If this demand is not met, Zeus vows to declare war on Poseidon. As Poseidon’s only child, Percy sets off on his behalf to find the lightning bolt and return it to Zeus. On the quest, he takes his friend Grover, a satyr, and Annabeth, a demi-god, the daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom. Their target is to reach Hades in the Underworld where they think they will find the bolt held captive. However, to reach the Underworld they first need to acquire three pearls that belong to Hades wife, to ensure that they can return from the Underworld alive!

Therefore, it is Medusa’s lair that is the first stop on their trip to find the first pearl. Medusa’s hair is writhing with snakes, and one look at her will turn anyone into stone. This is an ominous task therefore for three 12 year olds to undertake. Particularly when they reach the lair and see all the men and women who had been turned to stone in times before. It takes an immense amount of smarts and teamwork to manage to get to the pearl. Indeed, Percy has to chop off Medusa’s head to manage it and they take the head with them as a weapon. From here they go onto find the next pearl.

Their trials to find the three pearls are an adventure enough on their own without the actual quest even in consideration. However, there is a deadline constantly looming over the three children as they want more than anything to stop a war between the Gods. It slowly becomes evident that the question of who stole the lightning bolt is not as straight forward as everyone first thought and something a lot more sinister comes to light. Will Percy, Grover and Annabeth manage to discover what is going on and save the day? That’s for you to find out! Read this book and step into a world of mythical adventure and mystery. You definitely won’t regret it!
