Nike is a very popular company with many fans - which I am a part of. They are doing very well financially and are a multinational company. They are known by their symbol of a tick and their slogan is 'just do it.' Most businesses aim to be as successful as Nike. But is that what you really want?

Nike has been exposed. There have recently some footage of Nike’s sweatshops. Nike treat their workers terribly. These poor employees are abused, underpaid for ridiculous hours of hard work. Say you were to buy a bag around £40. The person who made it would only be paid 4p to make it. So in total they earn about £1.20 per month. What could you buy to live off of for a month with £1.20? I doubt you could afford much. But that is their everyday life.

Nike’s factories are mainly made up of children. Sweatshops like to employ young children since they won’t complain about working conditions and can be tricked into working long hours and being paid low wages as they don’t understand money’s value. These children are missing out on being kids. So while we get to run around in our comfortable blanket and having fun they are staying long hours to make that blanket.

A sweatshop is defined by the Department of Labour as a factory that violates 2 or more labour laws. It has three characteristics - low pay, long brutal hours and unhealthy working conditions. Sweatshops are illegal. But does Nike care? Clearly not. They have violated several labour laws with their scheme. So many people could be living better lives than what Nike gives them.

I still believe people would have worked for you but I don’t think that it is necessary to have to abuse them, work long hours and under pay them. These people are scared to death. As they are working, they can barely keep their eyes open but scared of the consequences. Fatigue meaning that their work won’t be as well as someone who is genuinely passionate about their work. When most people - like me - go shopping, we buy stuff with the best quality. I would rather buy something by a passionate worker than a rushed work. I am also disgusted by how when a mistake is made you just throw it on the floor and it builds up. SAVE THE PLANET! It is unhealthy for and in so many ways. Imagine the innocent little children running around.

Nike build their factories in low income countries (LICs) as their land is cheaper. This way they don’t have to spend as much money on buying factories compared to the UK. These countries need this money that Nike has invested in them. They need it to develop and “keep up” with High Income Countries. The government know how important it is that companies like Nike invest in them. This is why they allow their own people be treated like this. See how people can act for money. See what it has done to our world.

The world is letting this happen. They won’t do anything about it. That is why we need to do something about it. Even telling people is better than ignoring it. The CEO of Nike, Mark Parker, knows about this and ignores it but to be quite honest the CEO will be blamed and the one whose company will fall apart if he doesn’t do something about it.
