Mermaid Dreams

Mermaid Dreams

“Mummy! Daddy! Look! I can paddle!” I exclaimed as we played in the sea. My parents looked down proudly at their little child. There was pride in their eyes. Everyday I would look out of the window in my room and out to the sea ahead. I had always loved the sea.

When I was younger, I believed I could be a mermaid. I saw it on an article in the newspaper. If I could be a mermaid, then I would get to live in the sea forever. It would be a dream. So I followed the instructions listed. According to the report, you must bathe in the sea to “become one with the sea”. After this, I ran to my parents eager to tell them the results. They simply laughed and my dad threw me up in the air. I was even more determined now than ever. It was the exact same determination that made me practise my swimming morning and night. The water is, was and always will be my life.

We were walking through the market. My eyes looked over to see such a sight. It’s scaly tail shone when reflected against the sun. It was holographic and just my size. “Darling, come on.”I was mesmerised. I wanted it so badly. It would look amazing when I become a mermaid. Mum snapped her fingers in my face, throwing me out of my dreams.

“Sorry, it’s just … it would be the perfect tail for when I become a mermaid!” I cried. “Please!” I beggedMum dragged me away. I drew a picture of me in that tail in my diary. I never wanted to forget it.

Unfortunately life does not like to favour us and our wishes. I forgot about a month later. A year later, we relocated as my parents had received better offers. Years had gone by and the sea did not flutter back into my thoughts as it did before. When I looked out of the window, I saw another building with bright city lights and I could only hear the TV unlike the soft sound that the wave makes when it brushes against the sandy shore. Maturity rushed over me in no time. In the blink of an eye, I was packing for college. As I packed away my belongings, I found something – my diary. A collection of memories and emotions bombarded my brain as I opened the first page and found a comfortable spot on my bed.

I closed the book with a smile and droplets racing down my rosy cheeks leaving my blood-red eyes. I wiped my tears and placed the diary in the box after locking it. I popped the key in my pocket and carried the boxes into the car ready for tomorrow: the big day. It was that day. That night. That I had images flooded in my head. I remembered being a child. I remembered the sea. I remembered it all.

I strapped myself and looked on as I drove forward. Forward in my career; forward in my life and forward into the future. After unpacking, I headed down to the beach nearby and jumped into the ice cold water. I tried the tricks that I had learnt in my childhoodI had missed this. The sprinkles of refreshing water touch my dry skin. I walked out as confident and ready for the future. On a Saturday, I would go to refresh my mind after a week of stressing school. I didn’t have to be a mermaid to swim in the water that I loved.
