Pierre & Marie Curie

Husband and wife Pierre and Marie Curie are yet another two scientists who provided ground-breaking research used today worldwide, this time in the field of radiation. Both Pierre and Marie Curie were extraordinarily accomplished scientists when they married – a match made in heaven some would say! In 1903 Pierre won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his and his wife’s research on radiation; when he sadly passed away in 1906 due to a street accident, only 11 years after the couple got married, many speculated it was due to the long exposure to radiations he endured for the research. Whilst this was never proved it is said that Marie Curie did actually die for sure of too much exposure to radiation in 1934. In 1898 Pierre and Marie discovered Polonium, a new chemical element known by the symbol Po, which is highly radioactive and Radium, the sixth element in group 2 of the Periodic Table known by the symbol Ra with highly radioactive isotopes. In 1911 Marie Curie won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry and was the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes, and in different categories!

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein is a German theoretical physicist and winner of the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics who made a revolutionary impact in the world of Science leaving an everlasting legacy in his trail. Born in 1879 Einstein showed a strong passion and great ability in Maths and Science, he was naturally a curious child and as he grew older he became known as a philosopher of Science. Amongst his many accreditations is what is considered one of the world’s most famous equations: the mass-energy equivalence formula: E=mc2 (energy=mass times the speed of light squared). The formula states that if you take any object and multiply its mass with the speed of light (2.9 x 10^8 m/s) squared you can calculate the energy of the object.  Einstein is also famous for developing the general theory of relativity describing gravity along with the quantum theory of atomic motion in solids.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci wasn't just an incredibly accomplished scientist; he was an artist, an engineer, a musician, a writer, a mathematician and much much more! You will probably know him best as a painter due to his outstanding works which include the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper and of course the Vitruvian Man which describes the correlation between the human body and geometry. In fact Da Vinci took great interest in the human anatomy and transformed his thoughts and theories of our bodies into drawings. Da Vinci also liked to study flight by observing the movement of birds and designed flying machines similar to helicopters! Some of these machine designs were mounted to real machines and tested, many of them actually worked! Da Vinci proved to be an extraordinary figure and even wrote in the opposite direction so you would need to use a mirror to read it normally! A few years ago I visited an exhibition on the works of Da Vinci in Italy, where he is from, and between Da Vinci’s version of a life jacket and an intelligent mechanism to record time by the burning of a candle what I found most astonishing were the flying machines hanging from the ceilings and I couldn’t help smiling. Now whenever I go on a plane those machines designed by the simple observation of birds come to mind, and I smile yet again.
