Meet the Scientists Part I

Meet the Scientists Part I

Science is a fascinating subject which explores in depth all things concerning the physical world. Have you ever asked yourself where did all the science facts we know today come from? In many cases most people know of a machine not the inventor, a plate of food not the chef and it is difficult to give praise to those who have impacted our lives so greatly. So prepare to be amazed as in this article we will discover the scientists behind the science.

Galileo Galilei

Along with being the inventor of telescopes Galileo Galilei was a stubborn Italian scientist whose ideas changed the way we look at our entire solar system. By using his new invention Galileo was able to observe the sky more intensely than his ancestors and in 1610 he discovered four objects rotating around Jupiter; whilst at the time many did not believe the scientist, today these are known as the Galilean Satellites which surround Jupiter! Galileo lived in a period of strong religious authority which did not welcome new ideas; in fact the common knowledge in the 1600s was that the Earth was at the centre of the solar system (the geocentric model) and all planets rotated around Earth. Over time scientists like Johannes Kepler and Nicolaus Copernicus, along with Galileo himself, had realised that the Sun, not the Earth, is indeed at the core of our solar system! The struggle to convince the Church however was an uphill battle and Galileo spent several years under house arrest. According to one legend after Galileo was forced to withdraw his theory about the Sun during an Inquisition* he muttered ‘Eppur si muove’ (‘And yet it moves’).

Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin altered the common perception we once had of the world with his theory of evolution and natural selection. The binding principle of Darwin’s theory is that individuals that adapt to their environment have the best chance of survival and are more likely to reproduce. The new off springs will have inherited the characteristics (also known as variants) which helped their parents survive so there will be lots of species with similar advantageous variations. Darwin uses this theory to state that species evolve over time from ancestors similar to them or from those who share a few of their common traits.

Isaac Newton

Newton provided ground-breaking ideas in maths, physics and philosophy.  He is most famous for his theory of universal gravitation between two bodies which have mass, the sun and Jupiter for example, and is also known for his laws on motion. There are forces which act on a body to evoke motion and these can be reduced into three laws:

- ‘Inertia’ when an object is in motion it will stay as such until an outside force intervenes;

- F= ma. This law signifies that force is equal to mass multiplied by acceleration;

- To each action we know of there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Why not find out more about these three scientist at home? Make sure to look out for ‘Meet the scientist part II' and if you have any scientists you feel should be included feel free to drop a comment below!
