Meat-free 'Meat' Review: Part 2

Meat-free 'Meat' Review: Part 2

Continuing on from the previous article, I am going to review some more meat-free ‘meat’ products, to give you some ideas for what to try next.

        1)  Quorn Burgers  -  Quorn burgers are a product that is actually worth the hype. They come in packs of four or six, with Asda selling them for best value; packs of 6 for £1.50. These burgers can be prepared very quickly, only requiring eight minutes under the grill. They are very juicy, with an extremely convincing meaty taste, and are wonderful with burger buns and salad. I highly recommend giving these burgers a try if you can. They are available at most supermarkets.

       2)  Cauldron Marinated Tofu  -  If you’ve never had tofu before, this is a great introduction. Typically people have reservations about tofu, believing it to be bland and tasteless. Yes, on its own, Tofu hasn’t really got a flavour, but the whole point of it, is that it is extremely good at absorbing flavours, so it’s actually incredibly easy to make tofu taste however you want it to. It’s high in protein and low in fats, and works well in a range of dishes. This particular tofu is anything but flavourless. The marinade is very pleasant, composed of a wide range of herbs, from Turmeric to Parika. I have used this in a vegetable stir fry, and it worked very well. The marinade complements vegetables and rice perfectly, so it is easy to make your vegetarian stir fry much more exciting. This product is also very tasty on its own too as a snack. You can buy this at most supermarkets in the deli/healthy foods section.

     3)  Linda McCartney Deep Dish Country Pies  -  These come in a pack of two, and can be bought at most major supermarkets. They are a more affordable version of the Quorn Steak and Gravy pie, seeing as you get two for less than the price of a single Quorn Steak and Gravy pie. This pie is essentially an onion and ‘beef’ flavoured pie, so it is slightly different, but it is very tasty in its own right. The pastry is buttery and flaky, and goes very well with the filling. The gravy really enhances the flavour of the whole pie. ‘Beef’ chunks are substantial and have a good texture, resembling the real thing, and the taste is pretty good too. These are filling and make a lovely meal with vegetables. I would recommend trying these, especially if you are on more of a budget.

     Rating: 4/5

     4)  Quorn Chicken Nuggets  -  These nuggets are ideal if you want a junk food fix. That being said, they are surprisingly low in fat, and are far healthier than their chicken counterpart. They taste delicious and very very similar to actual chicken. The coating is not too thick, and the texture of the nugget is impressive, essentially crumbling in your mouth. I definitely recommend trying these if you need a quick meal.
