MCM London Expo: May 2015

MCM London Expo: May 2015

Throughout the 22nd to 24th of May, The Excel Centre of the London Dockyards hosted the 27th MCM Comicon, where people from far and wide were welcome to celebrate their love of all things fiction. Fans of film, television, games, comics, and even musicals came together to support the work of artists, writers, actors, and the like, this May’s celebration being bigger and better than ever. Felicia Day, nicknamed ‘Queen of the Nerds’, headlined the event with guests such as Sylvester McCoy, and cast members of both Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Once Upon a Time acting as a great attraction for the convention. However, it is important to recognise that such a gathering is never solely focused on the ‘big names’ of the fan community. The con’s ‘Comic Village’ is a significant part of the set-up, and is a series of small stalls, where comic book writers, or artists, sell their original creations, some offering commissions for a reasonable fee. These incredibly talented content producers act as a reminder of what all individuals truly appreciate; art. Whether it be a story, a drawing, or a video game, it has been conceived and worked towards by actors, writers, artists, and the like, the appreciation of the arts forms being what brings all attendees together.

Speaking of art, the cosplay (abbreviation of costume play, when someone dresses up as a fictional character) at Cons such as MCM is always wonderfully creative. Some are breathtakingly beautiful; many of the Disney princess cosplayers having hand stitched the dresses that they were wearing, working on the budget of a student. Others are outstandingly intricate, eyes widening as an Alien (from the critically acclaimed film ‘Alien’) paraded their perfectly made tail around the convention hall. Some are utterly adorable, the adult Joker cosplayers pretending to run in fear from a six-year-old Batman, and some are just well thought out, a group of four in metal rock gear and berries being a French Kiss. All, even the cosplayers who perhaps did not put as much time, or effort into their costumes, were received with compliments and praise by other Con goers, the comradery between strangers, like sports fans at a stadium.

Despite being over, the MCM London Comicon will return in October, showcasing a new range of stars, aspiring creators, and recreational events, such as the traditional Saturday night party. This Biannual event is something, which every single person who would class themselves as a ‘nerd’ will enjoy, and not only to sit in on panels regarding a show, film, game or comic that they appreciate. The opportunity to buy cheap merchandise, and support small time content creators are experiences which only a convention can truly provide, but the most exciting thing is simply to be there. Surrounded by people who love the same thing as you, the previous simile likening the event to those at a sports match being the most accurate way to describe the atmosphere. Despite only attending the Saturday, I can safely say that this May’s convention has been the best yet, and can’t wait for the three days of October where I, and my friends, will return to the Excel Centre, and the wonderful world of MCM Comicon.
