In one of my previous articles we learnt about Mauna Lao, the world’s largest volcano, but did you know you can make your very own volcano at home? It won’t be as large as Mauna Loa but the eruption from your baking soda and vinegar volcano will make up for it!
Equipment:
- Baking soda (not to be confused with baking powder!)
- Vinegar
- A container to put everything in without making a mess
- Paper towels for back up just in case the eruption gets out of hand!
Instructions:
Step 1 – Place some of the baking soda into your container
Step 2 - Pour in the vinegar
Step 3 – Sit back and enjoy the chemical reaction which will occur in a matter of seconds!
And there you have it, your own volcanic eruption! But what exactly has just happened? When baking soda (known as sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) combine they form carbonic acid, a highly unstable substance which causes the fizzing or eruption in the experiment as it gets away from the solution. In a real volcano the eruption depends on density and pressure: the magma, which is less dense than the rocks nearby, makes its way towards the top of the volcano. The magma full of gas forms a large chamber and then pressure from the surrounding rocks pushes the magma through the conduit (channel) and it escapes through an opening at the top of the volcano causing a big eruption.
TOP TIP: If you want to make your volcano more realistic why not test your arts and crafts skills? Decorating the container to resemble the outside of a volcano or add some food colouring which makes the eruption look even more amazing!
