After months of anticipation, it’s finally summer! With no school, beautiful sunshine (hopefully!) and plenty of time to spare it’s time to think about how you can make the most of your summer. As a second year university student, this is technically my last big, long summer before I enter the working world which is why I have had troubled trying to decide what to do in my spare three months before third year begins. After weeks of scouring the internet, I finally made myself a bucket list and am very excited to start! Here are a few useful tips that helped me think about how I could make this summer unforgettable.

Preliminary advice:

First, you should decide what kind of summer you’d like, whether it’s a travelling, working, or leisure summer. You can then cater the things you plan to do in the summer based on this first choice. I went to middle and high school in Italy where every summer break is three months long, hence I found it very useful to choose one big project to carry out over the months to stop me sinking into the depths of boredom. For example, one year I decided to learn as many Greek myths as I possibly could and another year I made my own dress (with the help of an expert friend!).

Tips:

Go outside! Take advantage of the good weather and dust down your bike or skateboard and go for a nice ride in the sunshine. Try outdoors activities with friends and family; for example, each year my family organises an obstacle course in our garden for us all to complete and after we go for a swim – it’s the perfect way to bond with everyone now that you have time off school!

Travel! Summer is the perfect time to explore new places and enjoy nature at its finest with a lovely nature walk. Or maybe got to the beach, lake or mountain for a day – travelling doesn’t have to be far nor expensive, even camping in your back garden can bring you plenty of adventurous stories to look back on in winter.

Have fun inside! Go to the library for fun this summer, not because you have to for homework – find the book that lets you live in the shoes of someone else for a few hours a week and cherish it! Also, unleash your creativity by trying out new crafts – visit our arts and crafts section for some ideas!

Cook! Explore your inner culinary abilities by creating deliciously refreshing snacks and treats for all to enjoy. Summer is the time to be healthy and cool, fruity juices or iced teas are lovely in the summer to fight off the sweltering heat. Why not try to make your own fruit/detox water by adding all your favourite fruits in a glass of water and ice - it’s heaven in a glass whilst you’re sunbathing!

Relax! Leave all the stress of school in the past and watch the sunrise or sunset, spend your nights gazing at the stars until you invent names for them all – anything that makes you feel serene and relaxed before another adventurous day in the sun.

Warnings:

Do not – no matter how tempting it is – stay indoors all day watching TV, playing video games or surfing the internet. You’ll regret it when the rain comes back and won’t have many fun memories of summer!

Outdoors exercise can be quite dangerous at time so make sure you think twice before doing that extra stunt on your bike! Also, remember to wear lots of sun cream.
