Lulworth Castle was originally built in the early 17th Century by a gentleman named Thomas Howard, 3rd Lord Bindon, who built the Castle in order to entertain hunting parties for the King and Court. The exterior of the Castle changed little over the years but the interior evolved depending on the fashions of the time. All year round you can enjoy walking in the castle, immersing yourself in a world of historical beauty.
Keep in mind appropriate footwear is essential as the estate extends over 12,000 acres (20 square miles) of the south Dorset countryside, including 5 miles of the Jurassic Coast and internationally renowned landmarks such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. This castle plays host to the best family festival Camp Bestival (see Places to go Article "Camp Bestival"), a four day fun packed adventure with something for everyone! Alongside an all star line up of amazingly talented musicians for any taste, there are also comedies, theatre shows and much more. The festival is held between the end of July and beginning of August. It is a camping festival BUT if you don't like the sound of that you can hire out a large manor of different sleeping arrangements including Teepees, yurts, Gypsy caravans, bell tents etc...
Another impressive feature of the Lulworth Castle is its farming roots, the Lulworth Estate producing more than 25,000,000 litres of milk each year, much of which is destined for Marks & Spencer; if you buy your fresh milk from their food halls, you may be drinking milk from Lulworth!
