Life of the prophet Muhammad

Islam is the worlds most fastest growing religion, with thousands of people converting to it every day. In Islam, the prophet Muhammad is regarded as one of the most perfect people and Muslims are encouraged to take inspiration from him when living their lives. Therefore, to understand Islam better in the midst of everything that is happening in the world today, it is important to know who the prophet actually is.

Ibn Ishaq compiled the most comprehensive and complete summary of Muhammad’s life in his Sirat Rasul Allah – for a detailed and original read, it is the most recommended text.

A series of miraculous signs before and after the birth of Muhammad indicated the coming of a prophet – one of which was Muhammad’s mother Amina hearing a voice saying “you are pregnant with the lord of this people” before his birth. Following his birth, in accordance with Meccan custom, he was given over to a Bedouin foster mother. From the moment that this poor family took in Muhammad, their crops prospered, and livestock began to produce great quantities of milk. One time, Muhhamad’s chest was split open by two men dressed in white and washed his insides with snow.

Many other signs aroused the interest of the Jews and Christians. Ibn Ishaq says “he grew up to be the finest of his people in manliness, the best in character”. He even became known amongst the people as “the trustworthy”. Following the Ka’ba being destroyed, an incident arose in which the leaders squabbled over who would replace the black stone. Muhammad came to help and ensured fairness by helping them all lift the stone on a white coat.

During the month of Ramadan during one of his long, lonely stays at Mount Hira, Muhammad was visited by the angel Gabriel. “Read!” insisted a voice, to which Muhammad replied “what shall I read!” This happened multiple times until Gabriel gave Muhammad what would become the first verses of surah 96 of the holy Quran. This revelation would be the beginning of Muhammad’s life as a prophet, a messenger of Allah.

For three years, Muhammads revelations spread quietly and privately, and a group of followers emerged – the first Muslims. It was here that ritual worship, or “Salat” was established. However after three years, God instructed Muhammad to go public with his message. This came with lots of opposition – and or the years to come, Muhammad and his followers would face terrible persecution from the Makkans, eventually leading to the death of his beloved Khadija and his uncle Abu Talib.

The Muslims however, did not renounce their faith, even in the face of torture. It was during one of the most antagonizing periods that Muhammad was granted the “Miraj” to heaven by God. Muhammad saw the prophets at each heaven during this journey. Following this, Muhammad and Abu Bakr headed to medina. The battle of Badr and Uhad ensued from the establishing of a city state in Medina. Yet, in the face of death and war, Muhammad continued to preach Islam, until 630CE, when Makkah fell, and the Muslims marched through their city.

A few years later, the prophet died at 63. Whilst many were in disbelief, Abu Bakr addressed the crowd. “Verily, whosoever worshipped Muhammad know that Muhammad is dead, but whosoever worshiped Allah, know that Allah is alive”. To this day, the daily utterances and discourses of Muhammad are known as Hadith, and provide guidance to Muslims in their lives.
