Kate McCann

In 2007 it became world news that 3-year-old Madeline McCann disappeared in Portugal; thanks to her money driven mother this has been impossible to forget. Over the years Kate McCann has profited from her child’s disappearance through the medium of books, public appearances and campaigning. After 9 years of enduring a desperate search for her daughter, Kate McCann has now been named one of the most inspirational women in Britain. But does she deserve it?

To set the scene, Kate McCann and her husband Gerry were enjoying a relaxing evening on their European holiday. They were enjoying the company of their friends, they were enjoying food served by the restaurant, enjoying the fine wine and pleasant atmosphere. Their three infant children however, were fifty metres away shut in a hotel room. Later that evening the father of the children discovered that the oldest, Madeline, was missing. Ever since police investigations have not stopped globally. It’s the mystery everyone is desperate to solve. The story of Madeline McCann has had the whole world intrigued for years, but most importantly, her mother Kate refuses to stop the search until she has answers. And that is why, alongside the likes of Joanna Lumley and JK Rowling, Kate McCann is one of the most inspirational women in Britain.

You may be asking yourself, “How is a woman that leaves her child to get abducted inspirational?”  I’ve been thinking the same thing. How has she gotten away with this? How are two neglectful parents still allowed to take care of their remaining children? Surely social services have something to say about this? But no, a couple of irresponsible parents are an inspiration to us all.  But why? Maybe if they weren’t white, maybe if they weren’t middle class or maybe if they weren’t doctors this would be a different story altogether.

However, she must be somewhat worthy of this title to have achieved it. According to Sue James, creator of the list, “Kate’s memoir poignantly charted her daughter’s disappearance and the continuing search for her.” As well as this, Kate gave evidence in a Parliamentary inquiry regarding missing children, and now uses her profile to support the search for other lost youths.  You could say she deserves some credit for the work she does now to help other families.

Personally, I think that it is an outrage to encourage anyone to be inspired by the likes of Kate McCann. Instead of being an inspiration, she is a perfect example of how not to look after your child. Perhaps before misplacing her little girl, Kate McCann could have been an inspiration to aspiring young, female doctors. However now we need to ask ourselves what a woman has to do to be considered inspirational after all. Is Kate McCann really an inspirational woman?
