Italy is undoubtedly one of the most famous and well-known countries of Europe as it is a very popular holiday destination and a very beautiful country. You have probably thought to visit Italy once or twice because the wine is exquisite of because the food is so good or just because it is such a lovely place, but how much do you really know about Italy?
For instance, do you know that Italy is probably the most undemocratic state in the whole of the European Union?
If you did not know, just keep reading through this article, and maybe you will be more aware of the Italian crisis and of the decadence of the European Union.
It all started in 2011, when the Berlusconi IV Cabinet dissolved on the 16th of November. The Cabinet, which governed for 1287, days failed to meet pre-election promises and failed to prevent and deal with the consequences of the economic crisis. Berlusconi’s leaderships started to fall apart due to conflicts within the party, The People of Freedom”, and such conflicts caused market anxiety which saw Italy on the verge of financial disaster. The Prime Minister was criticised by many and, due to many scandals in his private life and many legal accusations, he was forced to have a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and he presented his resignation accusing “eight traitors” who caused the party to fall apart.
After Berlusconi’s resignation, and the fall of the publicly elected government, the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano formed a technical government that led Italy to unity and implemented the austerity measures forced by the European Union to solve the debt crisis. The technocratic cabinet was composed entirely by unelected professionals, and Monti, which was the Prime Minister put in place by Napolitano, chose the ministers.
The unelected government led by Monti, a famous ex-economist, not only violated the democratic principles stated in the Italian Constitution, but it also brought into action a variety of measures which were against the popular opinion and were dictated by the EU elites. Monti’s government was the worst to rule the country in two decades. During his government, the GDP was losing on average 1.7%, meaning that the Italian population had €450 less of wealth every year. The industrial production also hit the bottom, decreasing of 3.6% due to the high level of taxation and VAT that was supposed to help to fill the debt. The unemployment rate also sky rocketed, being higher than the EU average by 1.5%, with almost 500.000 unemployed people during the first 8 months of the government. After the extensive and vigorous austerity measures that responded to the needs of the European leaders but weakened significantly the Italian public. This government lasted for 529 days, and it collapsed due not only to public unrest but also by conflicts in the parliament with the opposing parties.
The technocratic government ended on the 28th April, but yet again, the Italians were not given the chance to vote for their representative in parliament. Napolitano put another Cabinet in place, and Enrico Letta was the Prime Minister. Enrico Letta established a left-wing government with the Italian Democratic Party, but yet again, the European Commission dictated the economic and politic measures. Nothing changed drastically, and the new government only lasted for 300 days.
It fell apart on the 14th February 2014, due to its inconsistency and lack of positive measures. The second unelected finally dissolved and democracy could be restored. The people of Italy could have felt again the joy of voting for their own representatives, there was hope for a new, fresh and publicly elected government. Unfortunately these dreams of democracy collapsed as a new unelected government was formed on the 22nd February 2014, the Renzi Cabinet.
Led by the Democratic Party leader Matteo Renzi, better known as “the scrapper”, the new cabinet had the mission to bring Italy on the rise and deal with the atrocious impacts that the Monti Cabinet left behind. Surprisingly enough, nothing still changed during the third unelected government, as Italy is one of the weakest country of the Euro zone as of today. The actual Cabinet has dealt with a variety of scandals and reforms that have strengthened the power of the political class and changed, in multiple occasions, articles of the Constitution.
This proves that after three consecutive unelected Cabinet, Italy is the most undemocratic country of the civilized world, and it is shocking because it is part of the G8 and the G20, it is an important member of the EU and because it is a strong ally of the USA. Italy is a country scarred by the decisions of the economists and politicians that have also scarred the people of Greece and deprived them of their democracy.
