Dominic Cobb is a thief, skilled in taking dreams and information from subjects in R.E.M. phase, penetrating into their psyche at an unconscious level. The United States has sought and forced him to leave his children because charged with the murder of a person very dear to him. Still tormented by the idea of seeing his children and by guilt rooted deep in his dreams, Cobb decided to accept a different assignment from the usual: at the request of billionaire Saito, will implant an idea in the mind of an individual. In return, Cobb will get the chance to return home. He start putting together a team: he needs a creator that would plan the architecture of dreams, a forger, a sedative expert and of course the perfect plan to dig under three levels of the unconscious and create, emotionally, the origin of the idea which must be implanted.

“Inception” shows that Christopher Nolan is most influential talents of contemporary cinema: his art lies in its very abstract concepts in an accessible manner, managing to be linear in the most incoherent complexity. It is now, without doubt, the director of the intangible and narratives that go beyond standard imagination. He is able to push the eyes of the camera beyond the usual, and makes the curiosity and interest of the spectator grow as he develops his performance, just like a magician. This movie shows how he has improved, especially from his movie “Memento”, which definitely is a masterpiece and a must see despite the fact that you might need one or two more views from your first to fully appreciate it.

It is needless to stress how amazing the scenography is. It will leave you speechless with intricate and flawless details. Considering how hard it is to recreate the idea of a dream, the scenography is extremely articulated and fascinating: recreate the architecture of a dream and then a dream within a dream and all the different substrates of subconscious is no easy job, and Nolan has made it look effortless to jump from one layer of subconscious. The challenge that Nolan has faced was to make an action film that would provide, with fights, chases and scenes with high adrenaline content, the idea of the complexity of the human mind, its structure and its rules, without being overly complicated and chaotic. The soundtrack is also incredibly good and makes the viewer incredibly engaged as it flows and synchronises perfectly with the scenes shot.

At some points in the movie, by either staring at the screen or by absorbing the narrative of the movie, the viewer realizes that he is before a true artist. Nolan skilfully assembling film editing, special effects and cinematic tricks of all kinds, to give shape to a labyrinth, to let the viewer get lost and mostly become overwhelmed by the subconscious of the protagonists, their guilt and their choices. For instance, when Cobb finds the architect for his plan, the complexity of the idea of shaping subconscious is made evident; suddenly the surrounding environment of the two characters mutates and evolves in a breath-taking way, and in this particular scene, the viewer can fully observe the amount of care that Nolan and his team have put into details.
