Summer is officially here! This means you can relax outside in the garden with a cold drink, catching the sun, with exams being a distant memory. Spending your days lying around with your friends and family calls for a great playlist, so read on to find out how to get those summer vibes.
I use Spotify to make playlists, so you can download the free version to get started or follow along on iTunes or whatever software you prefer. First pick a few songs that put you in the right state of mind for a summer afternoon. For me, these are LA Calling by Crystal Fighters, Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader and Stare into the Sun by Graffiti6. These will be your starting off point. Then check out the Spotify “related artists” to find some more tracks to add. If you are using iTunes, the “related” link in iTunes Store will show you what people interested in the page you were on also bought. Once this process has led you to another track you like, repeat it and find more related artists. If you find yourself thinking of another song that would be perfect in your playlist, add that too! The great thing about using related artists to make a playlist is that it will introduce you to so much new music and you will uncover some old favourites too!
You want to end up with about 3 hours of music, so approximately fifty songs. The great thing about playlists is you can keep adding to them, so next summer once you’ve added your new favourites you’ll have an even longer playlist! And if one song starts to get boring, just remove it!
My fifty song playlist is as follows, feel free to use it and add to it!
1. LA Calling – Crystal Fighters – This is my happy song, I hope you love it as much as I do! Listen to this when you’re in a dancing mood.
2. Dancing in the Moonlight – Toploader
3. Stare into the Sun – Graffiti6 – The perfect song for a summer’s day, but please don’t actually stare into the sun! (You have to listen to my eye-care advice, I have glasses).
4. Friday I’m In Love – The Cure – A romantic song that will give you butterflies if you’ve ever been in a relationship with someone you don’t get to see all the time.
5. Let’s Go – Matt and Kim
6. A-Punk – Vampire Weekend
7. Electric Feel – MGMT – This groovy song will put you in a chilled mood no matter how hot the weather.
8. Pumped Up Kicks – Foster The People – A catchy chorus disguises the dark story behind these lyrics.
9. What You Know – Two Door Cinema Club
10. Give Me A Try – The Wombats
11. Girls/Fast Cars – The Wombats – The Wombats get two mentions in this playlist – check out their first album, A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation if you want to hear more!
12. Ooh La – The Kooks
13. Arabella – Arctic Monkeys – I’m a big Arctic Monkeys fan and will put them on whatever playlist I make. Arabella is one of their more relaxed songs – the album Suck It And See has more relaxed songs, with their earlier albums containing more rocky tunes.
14. Come Closer – Miles Kane
15. Piledriver Waltz – Alex Turner – There’s a version of this song with the whole of Arctic Monkeys but this version, recorded for the movie Submarine, is my favourite.
16. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – The Smiths – A longstanding indie favourite, The Smiths, headed by Morrissey, are a good listen if you’re in a reflective mood.
17. Common People – Pulp
18. Alright – Supergrass
19. Ain’t It Fun – Paramore – I only recently started listening to Paramore and this song from their latest album makes me wonder where they’ve been all my life!
20. My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark – Fall Out Boy – A great live performance of this was at the VS fashion show with Taylor Swift.
21. Sitting, Waiting, Wishing – Jack Johnson
22. Lucky – Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat – Cheesy but cute.
23. Blame It On Me – George Ezra – Ezra has a powerful, deep voice that makes his songs really stand out in the indie music scene.
24. Every Other Freckle – alt-J
25. Ivy & Gold – Bombay Bicycle Club
26. My Number – Foals
27. Toothpaste Kisses – The Maccabees – This is such a romantic song, perfect for a slow dance.
28. Hounds of Love - new mix – The Futureheads
29. The Wire – Haim
30. Elastic Heart – Sia – This song gained a lot of attention for its controversial video, but it’s so good I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had reached similar levels of popularity without the free publicity.
31. Ship To Wreck – Florence + The Machine – Florence’s voice is gorgeous, this more recent song from her shows why she was chosen to replace the Foo Fighters at Glastonbury after Dave Grohl’s injury.
32. Hard Out Here – Lily Allen – This song is not suitable for younger listeners due to explicit language, but Lily’s feminist lyrics and poppy delivery make it a must-hear for over 16’s.
33. Lonely Boy – The Black Keys
34. Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked – Cage The Elephant
35. For The Girl – The Fratellis
36. Valerie – The Zutons – This is the original of Amy Winehouse’s hit, and it’s definitely worth hearing.
37. Dreaming of You – The Coral
38. Something To Talk About – Badly Drawn Boy
39. Jenny Don’t Be Hasty – Paolo Nutini
40. Compliment Your Soul – Dan Croll
41. From Nowhere – Dan Croll
42. Of The Night – Bastille
43. Radioactive – Imagine Dragons
44. Anna Sun – Walk the Moon
45. Some Nights – Fun. – The We Are Young singers rock some impressive harmonies in this number.
46. Drive By – Train
47. Wagon Wheel – Darius Rucker with Lady Antebellum – I first heard this country tune in Canada, and the chorus somehow always makes me smile.
48. I Always Knew – The Vaccines
49. Breezeblocks – alt-J – We had Every Other Freckle earlier, now another alt-J song! Listen to Left Hand Free if you want to hear more from these guys.
50. This Year – The Mountain Goats
